McFarland is Professor Emeritus at the Unviersity of Texas at Austin. Prior to retirement he held the William and Bettye Nowlin Endowed Professorship in Photography. He received his B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1973 and his M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1976. Among his awards and honors are the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2010-11) and three National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship Grants over three decades, (1978-79, 1984-85, and 1990-91).

His work has been included in numerous important exhibitions both nationally and internationally, and he has been published widely. He is highly regarded in the field of photography and is noted for his creative activity, teaching and service.
