Lincoln, Neb.--You may think that the most time-consuming degrees available at UNL involve the future doctors and lawyers of the world. However, take a walk by Woods and Richards Hall, any time of the day or night, and you will never cease to find student artists working around the clock. Whether witnessed by the gleaming lights shining from the various studios or by the warm orange glow of the ceramic kilns just outside Richards Hall, the students of the Department of Art and Art History are always abuzz. The 35 dedicated students of the UNL Clay Club are no exception. For these students, preparation for the end of the semester has been taking place since the first day of classes.

Each semester, the UNL Clay Club, brings a close to the term by selling work they have created throughout the previous months. This year the club’s sale and raffle will take place on Friday, Dec.11 from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 12 from  9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in Richards Hall Room 118.

“It’s important that we provide our members with valuable opportunities that will assist in their growth as an artist," said Clay Club President Stuart Gair, who is working toward his Master of Fine Arts in the ceramics program. “It’s equally important that we engage with the community so that they can understand what it is we’re doing.”

Proceeds from the UNL Clay Sale will help to fund visiting artists for the program. These visiting artists offer in-class demonstrations, public lectures and critical feedback to students regarding their work. Additionally, the funds will aid club members in attending the National Council for Education on Ceramic Arts (NCECA); a yearly conference where students are able to engage with both mentors and peers in their field—as well as attend educational seminars that feature cutting edge techniques, materials and ideas.

In addition to works of art that may be purchased, the bi-annual event will include a raffle of faculty work. Tickets for the raffle may be purchased throughout the sale on Friday and Saturday. The sale and raffle alike will represent a wide array of concepts, aesthetics and techniques, ranging from sculptural to functional work.

A member of the ceramics faculty will provide a preview of the sale at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 11.
