The University of Nebraska–Lincoln School of Music presents the Chiara String Quartet in the next Hixson-Lied Concert Series on Monday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall on the UNL city campus.

Tickets are $20 adults, $10 seniors and $5 students and available at the Lied Center for Performing Arts Box Office at (402) 472-4747 or at the door.

The Nov. 19 concert program includes Mozart’s String Quartet in C Major, K. 465, “The Dissonance;” Lutoslawski’s String Quartet; and Dvorak’s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 96, “The American.”

The Chiara String Quartet includes Rebecca Fischer and Hyeyung Julie Yoon, violins; Jonah Sirota, viola; and Gregory Beaver, cello.

Mozart’s String Quartet in C Major, K. 465, is nicknamed “The Dissonance” because of its slow, uncommonly dissonant introduction, which contrasts greatly from the rest of his works. It is the last of Mozart’s “Haydn” quartets, which were dedicated to Haydn, and is arguably his greatest and most beloved one.

Written in 1964, Lutoslawski’s String Quartet is fully notated but leaves some decisions about the performance up to the quartet members to make spontaneously.

Dvorak’s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 96, the iconic American from 1893 concludes the program. The piece was written while Dvorak and his family were on vacation in the Czech community of Spillville, Iowa. He described the piece as a “musical postcard” to his native land, which included “impressions and greetings from the New World.”

Renowned for bringing fresh excitement to traditional string quartet repertoire, as well as for creating insightful interpretations of new music, the Chiara String Quartet captivates its audiences throughout the country. The Chiara has established itself as among America’s most respected ensembles and celebrates 13 seasons of playing together in 2012-2013.

The Chiara Quartet have been artists-in-residence at UNL since 2005. In the summer, they are in residence at Greenwood Music Camp and the UNL Chamber Music Institute. Their recording of Jefferson Friedman’s String Quartet No. 3 was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2011.
