LINCOLN, Neb.— This year’s annual University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music Dance Program’s Evenings of Dance Concert features the work of three internationally celebrated guest choreographers; two dance faculty members, whose work has also been seen around the world; two student works that have been presented for adjudication at the American College Dance Association Conference (ACDA) in Wichita, Kan. and for the first time there will be a performance by dance alumni who have founded “embi”, a dance collective.

Evenings of Dance takes place on four days: Thursday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 23 at 3 p.m. All of the performances take place in the Lied Center’s Carson Theater, 11th and Q Streets. Tickets are General Admission $12; Faculty/Staff $10; Students/Seniors $7; available approx. one hour prior to performance at the door.

One of the guest artists was Julie Mayo, who is busy making groundbreaking, postmodern performance work in NYC. Julie came for a week in October and chose six students to work with her to create an original piece titled “hush.”

Jenna Riegel, of Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, has come to Nebraska several times. She has set work on students as well as the professional company that Professor Susan Ourada directs, sloDance. Riegel joined the dance program at Nebraska for another wonderful week of virtuosic, quirky and luscious master classes and dance making. With 13 dancers, it was a clear choice for her piece to represent Nebraska at ACDA, along with the work of student choreographers Lauren Kraemer and Jordan Patt.

The guest pieces are rounded out by the work of Laurel Jenkins, who incorporated thought and action around the Women’s March that was happening during her residency. Jenkins performed for postmodern dance pioneer Tricia Brown for many years and layers much of that aesthetic to her work. It is especially meaningful to the dancers they were able to share some of this legacy, as Ms. Brown passed away weeks after the residency.

Add to this a lush sextet choreographed by Dr. Hye-Won Hwang, a sweet and quirky duet by embi, and finally work by Ourada, who worked with members of the Senior Dance Ensemble and sloDance to express images that were inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem, “The Human Family”. These last two works will also be shown with the live accompaniment of Violinist Hyeyung Yoon and Cellist Greg Beaver from the Chiara String Quartet as well as Paul Barnes from the Glenn Korff School of Music on April 25th also at the Carson Studio Theater.
