Moran Woodwind Quintet recital is Nov. 17

The Moran Woodwind Quintet is the resident faculty woodwind quintet of UNL's Glenn Korff School of Music. Members include Jeffrey McCray, bassoon; Diane Barger, clarinet; John Bailey, flute; Alan Mattingly, horn; and William McMullen, oboe. The group was formed in 1986 and is named for the late John Moran, director of the UNL School of Music.

"Our fall concert has three very contrasting works—one transcription of a classic, one with jazz and salsa influence, and one very intense modern work," Bailey said.

The program starts with Mozart's famous Serenade in C Minor, K. 388, arranged from the octet version for woodwind quintet by Israeli bassoonist Mordechai Rechtman. Also on the program are two original works for quintet: Cuban jazz great Paquito D'Rivera's "Aires Tropicales" (with movements drawing on South American and Cuban dance, African rhythms, and American jazz); and Baylor University composer Scott McAllister's "With Growing Wind and Tide," which features extreme contrasts in texture, color, and tempo.
