Lincoln, Neb.—The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Department of Art and Art History announces the fourth annual Nebraska National Undergraduate Juried Art Exhibition. The exhibition will feature the work of the best undergraduate student artists from across the country.

The exhibition opens Sept. 4 and continues through Sept. 25 at the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall. There will be a First Friday opening reception on Sept. 4 from 5-7 p.m. with the awards announced at 6 p.m.

Each year, three different media disciplines are featured in the exhibition. This year’s show includes sculpture, painting and drawing.

Four Howard Awards of Excellence will be presented:  $1,000 Best of Show Drawing, $1,000 Best of Show Painting, $1,000 Best of Show Sculpture and a $1,500 Grand Prize.

“The idea for this exhibition was two-fold. One, we wanted to bring the best undergraduate art in the country here and put it on display to let students across the country have a good venue for display and to make sure our students would see that work,” said Department of Art and Art History Chair Pete Pinnell. “And second, this department is particularly strong in its traditional disciplines (painting/drawing, ceramics sculpture, printmaking, photography, etc.), and we call ourselves that. Having the show be discipline-specific celebrates that at other schools.”

This year’s jurors are Ebony Patterson for sculpture and Deborah Zlotsky for painting and drawing.

“We tie this show to our Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Scholar Program,” Pinnell said. “So we hire two people to be visiting artists and scholars, and they jury the show and judge it. They’ll present workshops for the students.”

Patterson (http://ebonygpatterson.com/), who was born in Kingston, Jamaica, received an honors diploma in painting from Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts and an M.F.A. in printmaking/drawing from Sam Fox College of Art and Design at Washington University in St. Louis. Her recent exhibitions have included “En-Mas” at the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans, “Us, We+Them” at the Monique Meloche Gallery in Chicago and “Cheap and Clean: The Masculinities Interrogation Project,” a multimedia interactive installation that was shown in Trinidad, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda and Kentucky.

Zlotsky (http://deborahzlotsky.com/home.html) has exhibited across the country, and her drawings are in the curated flat files of Pierogi Gallery and The Boston Drawing Project at Joseph Carroll and Sons Gallery. Her recent and upcoming projects include solo exhibitions at Robischon Gallery in Denver; the SACI Gallery at Studio Art Center International in Florence, Italy; and Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York City. Zlotsky holds a B.A. in the History of Art from Yale University and a M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the University of Connecticut.
