The Ross lowers admission price; gets upgrades

calendar icon24 Jul 2015

Lincoln, Neb.--As of July 1, The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center has lowered all of its admission prices by 25¢ in order to reward its customers for their support.  Moreover, UNL students will be admitted to any screenings at any time of the day or night at a price of $5.

This and other changes and upgrades already completed, planned, or in process have been made possible by a generous gift from the estate of Mary Riepma Ross, establishing what will eventually be a $9.5 million endowment at the University Foundation earmarked for The Ross.

Installed this month is a state-of-the art vision and hearing impaired system.  The Closed Captioning System being installed is designed to transmit hearing impaired (HI) audio, visually impaired narrative (VI-N), and closed captions into our auditoria using standard infrared (IR) technology.  Seat Mount display units that fit onto seat arms will be utilized for closed captions.

The seat mount caption receiver provides our patrons with a private display that is attached by a goose neck to the seat arm.  The units display the user-defined welcome message until the presentation begins.  It then displays the closed captions delivered in the digital cinema package (DCP).  If more than one language was delivered in the DCP, the user can select up to four languages to view.  A “privacy filter” reduces the visibility of the display to others in the auditorium reducing the distraction to them.

A single infrared emitter broadcasts closed caption texts and two channels of audio into an auditorium.   Channel one is for hearing impaired (HI) and channel two is for visual impaired narrative (VI-N).  The use of IR instead of radio frequency transmission eliminates interference between auditoria.

This new system will greatly enhance the movie going experience for our vision and hearing impaired patrons.

Finally, we have updated our stairway lighting system with new LED lighting that will better illuminate our patrons’ way to their seats once the movie has begun.

Thanks to the magnanimous generosity of Mary Riepma Ross, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Lincoln Community are able to enjoy one of the finest state-of-the-art facilities in the nation.  Her gift will keep The Ross vibrant and exceptional well into the foreseeable future.
