UNL Ceramics Alum to present lecture April 19

Lincoln, Neb. - Michael Strand, the recipient of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts’ Alumni Achievement Award in Art this year who received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1999 from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, will present a free public lecture on Friday, April 19 at 2:30 p.m. in Richards Hall Rm. 14.

Strand will receive his Alumni Achievement Award in Art on Saturday, April 20, as part of the College’s Honors Day celebrations.

Strand is known for orchestrating projects that unite craft, art and social engagement. He is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Visual Arts at North Dakota State University.

His recent work, “The Misfit Cup Liberation Project,” was prominently featured in the 2013 NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) Biennial Exhibition at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft as the third of ten iterations globally. The most recent this past November at the Tallinn Applied Arts Triennial in Tallinn, Estonia.

Strand’s work has been published internationally, with articles in Ceramics Technical, Studio Potter, Hemslojen, The Chronicle of Higher Education and Public Art Review. His recent “Artstimulus” projects were cited in the Yale University Press publication “40 Under 40: Craft Futures” by Smithsonian curator Nicholas Bell. In addition Strand recently presented a TEDx talk titled "The Spaces Between: Art, Craft and Humanity.”
