NYAA application guidelines

The Nebraska Young Artist Awards annually recognizes 11th grade students from across Nebraska who are gifted and talented in the areas of visual art, dance, music, film and new media, and theatre. High school juniors who reside in Nebraska or attend a Nebraska high school are eligible to apply. UNL faculty make the final decision of which students will be invited to a special day of activities and awards program on April 9, 2014.

Applications must be submitted online at unlarts.slideroom.com by 11:59 p.m. CST on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013. No late applications will be accepted.

You will be notified of the results the first week of February 2014 by email, so be sure you register an e-mail address that you will have access to at that time. All notifications will be by e-mail this year.

Application Instructions

  1. Go to unlarts.slideroom.com.
  2. Sign up for a free account on SlideRoom.
  3. After registering, select the appropriate category within the “Nebraska Young Artist Awards” program and proceed through the application process.
  4. Please note the media requirements for each area, as noted below. Each area has different requirements, so be sure you are sending in a complete application for your area of interest.
    • Images: up to 5 MB each (jpg, png, or gif)
    • Videos: up to 60 MB each (mov, wmv, flv, mp4)
    • PDF: up to 10 MB each
    • MP3: up to 30 MB each
  5. Teachers, please note: If you are submitting an application on behalf of a student, please make sure you are filling in the student's name and e-mail when you register. The applications should be in the student's name.

Submission Guidelines per Interest Area

Please note:
  • You can combine certain elements into one doc or pdf file, but please make sure your application includes all of the required elements listed below for the area in which you are applying.
  • If you are submitting applications for multiple areas, you should submit a separate application for each area of interest. Students may apply in up to three different categories.

Dance

You will need to upload two items.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your teacher (doc or pdf files accepted) on the Attachments page.
  • Submit a video (mov, wmv, flv or mp4 file up to 60MB) of an original solo dance in any dance style, except cheer dance. The solo should be a recent recording from a performance or in a studio, but must be a solo dance of the lone dancer performing choreographed work and not class exercises. Submit this on the Add Media page.

Visual Art

You will need to upload two items.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your teacher (doc or pdf files accepted) on the Attachments page.
  • Submit one image of your original artwork (jpg, png or gif file up to 5MB). Any medium is now accepted—painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, graphic design, printmaking or digital media. Choose your best work! But please only submit one image of your artwork. Submit this on the Add Media page.

Music: Composition

You will need to upload three items.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your teacher (doc or pdf files accepted) on the Attachments page.
  • Submit a scan of your original score (pdf file up to 10MB) on the Add Media page.
  • Submit up to a 3-minute audio file (mp3 recording at 128kbps--high fidelity) of a recording of your composition (this can be converted from the midi file). Submit this on the Add Media page.

Music: Voice or Instrumental

You will need to upload two items.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your teacher (doc or pdf files accepted) on the Attachments page.
  • Submit up to a 3-minute audio file (mp3 recording at 128kbps--high fidelity) of a solo performance of a piece selected from the standard western classical music repertoire (e.g. Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, etc.). Submit this on the Add Media page.

Theatre: Directing and Management

You will need to upload four items.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your teacher (doc or pdf files accepted) on the Attachments page.
  • Submit a pdf or doc file with your resume and list of shows you have worked on on the Attachments page.
  • Submit a pdf on the Add Media page that includes the following materials and information: show-bible for directing work, promptbook for showing stage management work and/or other materials appropriate to your project for theatre management. Specify your position on the project.
  • If Directing, upload a video showing your directing work (mov, wmv, flv or mp4 file up to 60MB). Submit this on the Add Media page.

Theatre: Film and New Media

You will need to upload three items.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your teacher (doc or pdf files accepted) on the Attachments page. (This could be added in one file with your resume below.)
  • Submit a resume listing the film and new media projects you have worked on. Specify what your role in each project and your role in the examples submitted. Submit this on the Attachments page.
  • Submit a video (mov, wmv, flv or mp4 up to 60MB) not to exceed five minutes showing examples of film, video production or computer animation and other new media. Submit this on the Add Media page.

Theatre: Design/Technical

You will need to upload three items.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your teacher (doc or pdf files accepted) on the Attachments page.
  • Submit a resume listing the shows you have worked on (pdf or doc files accepted). Submit on the Attachments page.
  • Submit a pdf file that includes photos of productions specifying your responsibilities, as well as sketches and drafting of design work, if applicable on the Add Media page.

Theatre: Acting

You will need to upload three items.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your teacher (doc or pdf files accepted). on the Attachments page.
  • Submit a performance resume (doc or pdf file) on the Attachments page. Include a headshot on your resume..
  • Submit a video (mov, wmv, flv or mp4 file up to 60MB) showing two contrasting monologues no longer than 2 minutes each. Submit this on the Add Media page.
