Jordan Redd

This past weekend, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music student Jordan Redd won the West Central Division of MTNA Young Artist Brass Competition. The competition itself takes place in rounds. In October, Redd won the state round when he competed against other players from the state of Nebraska. The next round is the regional round, which took place in Iowa City, Iowa this past weekend. There he competed against other brass players from the states in the West Central Region, which includes states like MO, NE, ND, SD, IA, etc... He will now be going to the last round which will take place in Lake Buena Vista, FL. There he will compete against the other regional winners to determine the national winner. Our own Garrett Hope has an article on newmusicbox.com -- Leveling Up, Part 1: The Business of Sheet Music

As I am wrapping up a recent commission for high school concert band, I am reflecting on my experience composing for educational instrumental ensembles.  Writing music for these ensembles is deeply rewarding—primarily because they are eager to perform freshly composed music and are willing to try new things.

Kevin Hanrahan

Kevin Hanrahan

From the blog, the Diction Police:

While I was at the International Congress of Voice Teachers this past summer, I happened upon a seminar given by an old friend of mine, Dr. Kevin Hanrahan, who is Associate Professor of Voice at the Glenn Korff School of Music of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Matthew Clegg, a DMA voice student at the same university. The seminar was entitled Benjamin Britten: A Study in Vocal Acoustics, and focused on Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, and A Charm of Lullabies for mezzo-soprano, looking into how the composer set the text, to see if the singer simply sang exactly as the text (specifically the vowels) as composed whether it would match the dynamics and expression that Britten intended. It was so fascinating that I asked him to share some of their findings with us!

PROKOFIEV: Symphony No. 1, “Classical”
HOLLOWAY: Europa and the Bull
TCHAIKOVSKY: The Nutcracker Suite

This delightful prelude to the holiday season opens with Prokofiev’s buoyant tribute to the Classical era. Principal tubist Craig Fuller offers a musical portrayal of Jupiter and his lustful hankering for the beautiful nymph, Europa. Tchaikovsky’s suite from The Nutcracker brings to musical life the Sugar Plum Fairy, a Waltz of the Flowers, and the lively Chinese, Arabian and Russian character dances.
