UNL Vocal Jazz

Director: Dr. David von Kampen

The UNL Vocal Jazz Ensemble is a small choir, open to all members of the University community by audition, that focuses on performing in the jazz idiom. Students are instructed in varying tonal and timbral production, the art of solo jazz singing, and vocal improvisation. Students experience performing jazz arrangements of standard jazz repertoire using a sound system and accompanied by a rhythm section of piano, bass and drums. The Ensemble has participated in various on- and off-campus performances including on UNL concert stages, in area coffee houses, at area festivals (including the UNL Chamber Choir Festival and the NCDA Vocal Jazz Festival), and on caroling tours.

Vocal Jazz rehearses twice a week, on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 5:00-6:15 pm, for a total of 150 minutes a week. Auditions occur at the beginning of each semester. Audition notices with details will be posted around Westbrook Music Building.
