Interdisciplinary UNL research team re-imagines decommissioned missile silo through storytelling, emerging technologies
Lincoln, Neb.--Thanks to a Grand Challenges grant, an interdisciplinary team of student and faculty researchers at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is re-imagining a decommissioned Atlas-F missile silo near Seward, Nebraska, into the Ice Coring and Education Silo Center. Upon its completion, the facility would be the first facility of its kind in the world.

Huskers mentor young filmmakers on the Pine Ridge Reservation
Lincoln, Neb.--During a 10-day stay on the Pine Ridge Reservation in late July and early August, four University of Nebraska–Lincoln students led a summer camp to teach reservation youth how to write, film and edit the stories they want to tell.
In turn, the university students, all enrolled in the selective Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, learned about the history, culture and landscape of the Pine Ridge Reservation and the Lakota people who live there.

Huskers work behind the camera alongside professionals on film set
Lincoln, Neb.--Bright lights entered small town Nebraska for a project led by a team from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
About a dozen Husker students served on the crew for a short film written and directed by Richard Endacott, professor of cinema and screenwriting. Endacott said giving students hands-on experience working alongside professionals gave them insight into all aspects of production.

Collaboration promotes teaching innovation through art, emerging media
Lincoln, Neb.--As technology continues to rapidly evolve, a group of Nebraska researchers is collaborating with the state’s K-12 educators, artists and administrators to imagine the future of media.
The Teaching with Arts and Emerging Media (Art TEAMS) project is under way in classrooms throughout Nebraska. The five-year pilot project is designed to promote teaching innovation through arts and emerging media in Nebraska public schools.

With Electronic Arts internship, Mallula built worlds through sound
Lincoln, Neb.--For aspiring audio artists like senior Alijah Mallula, few opportunities could be more exciting than an audio artist internship with Electronic Arts in Redwood City, California, an opportunity she beat out over 600 applicants to secure.
“I was shocked, for sure.” she said of learning that she scored the internship. “And to be honest, I still can’t believe it. It feels like a dream.”

UNL Arts leaders advance strategic initiatives in London
Lincoln, Neb.--Four members of the administrative team in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts were in London Sept. 10-15 to explore the future of design in live performance and to engage further with The Open String project.
Dean Andy Belser, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film Director Hank Stratton, Johnny Carson Endowed Director in Emerging Media Arts Megan Elliott and Glenn Korff School of Music Director Felix Olschofka, along with Art Fabrication Space Manager Joseph Holmes, made the trip.

Nebraska Rep opens season with ‘Sense and Sensibility’
Lincoln, Neb.--The Nebraska Repertory Theatre opens its 2023-2024 season with “Sense and Sensibility” by Kate Hamill. This is a modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s timeless classic novel.
Performances are Sept. 28-Oct. 7 in Howell Theatre. For showtimes and ticket information, visit https://nebraskarep.org. The production is directed by Assistant Professor of Practice Rafael Untalan.
“Sense and Sensibility” tells the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, as they come of age.

41 students selected for new Carson Center cohort
Lincoln, Neb.—Forty-one students, including 28 first-year students and 13 transfer students, have been selected to join the latest cohort of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts.
This is the fifth cohort for the center, which opened in the fall of 2019. There will be a total of 136 emerging media arts majors this fall.
While 32 of the 41 students hail from Nebraska, this year’s cohort also includes students from Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, New York and South Dakota.
