About The Program

The Glenn Korff School of Music offers both a Masters degree and a Doctoral degree in conducting, with concentrations in choral conducting, orchestral conducting, and wind band conducting.

Undergraduate Opportunities

While the University of Nebraska-Lincoln does not currently offer an undergraduate degree in conducting, undergraduate participation in our ensembles is a vital part of the UNL experience. We view the exposure and musical diversity offered in our undergraduate music degrees allows for the development of a well-rounded musician and educator.

With seven bands and seven choirs to choose from there is definitely a place for you in the Westbrook Music Building, the home of the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Graduate Program Information (M.M. or D.M.A. tracks for Choral, Orchestral or Wind Band Conducting)

Wind Band Conducting

Applicants to the wind band conducting program should be individuals who wish to join a community of scholars, performers and pedagogues dedicated to the study and practice of band conducting as an applied performance medium. Enrollment in the wind band conducting studio is intentionally limited and auditions are competitive. Typically, the studio includes three students (a variable combination of MM and DMA candidates), therefore a high degree of musicianship, scholarship, and professionalism, as well as an engaging interpersonal style are essential. The objective of the program is to develop skillful, expressive conductors who are prepared to succeed in both professional and academic settings.

Choral Conducting

The Glenn Korff School of Music offers a Master of Music degree and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting. Students are engaged through thorough and varied activities to further their craft, the choral art, and their careers. Most importantly, classes, rehearsals, research, labs, and activities will continue to "sharpen the ax" of the conductor.

Instrumental and opera students in graduate choral conducting have the opportunity to cross over to another genre; working with specialists in opera, wind ensemble, chamber music, and orchestral opportunities are available and encouraged.

Students in the UNL choral conducting classes conduct other musicians accompanied by graduate level pianists, not recordings. The graduate lab classes are comprised of other singers, volunteers, future conductors, and peers. Undergraduate choral conducting students may audition for positions in the graduate classes. Graduate students frequently coach undergraduate choral conductors.
