Rhonda Garelick

Director of the Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium and Professor of Performing Arts and English

Garelick is Professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences with a special joint appointment in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. She is the founder and director of the Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium based in the Hixson-Lied College.

Professor Garelick is a scholar of performance, fashion, literature, visual art, and cultural politics. Her books include: Mademoiselle: Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History (Random House, September 2014); Fabulous Harlequin: ORLAN and the Patchwork Self (ed., University of Nebraska Press, 2010; winner of first prize for publication design from the American Association of Museums, named a 2011 Book of Critical Interest by Critical Inquiry); Electric Salome: Loie Fuller's Performance of Modernism (Princeton University Press, 2007); and Rising Star (Princeton University Press, 1998). She has also co-edited a special, double issue of Southwest Review, entitled Performance as Style/Style as Performance, which was named a “Notable Special Issue” in Best American Essays, 2011.

Garelick’s work has also appeared in The New York Times, New York Newsday, the International Herald Tribune and the Sydney Morning Herald, as well as in numerous literary journals, critical anthologies and museum catalogues. For her work, Garelick has received awards from organizations including: the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Whiting Foundation, the Getty Research Institute, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Dedalus Foundation, the American Association of University Women and the French government. In 2006, she received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.

Professor Garelick has taught at Yale University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Columbia University and Connecticut College. She received her Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in French and Comparative Literature from Yale University, and did graduate work at both the University of Paris/VII and the Ecole Normale Supérieure. She has also spent more than 10 years as a research and strategy consultant to industries including fashion, television and journalism.

Please note: Rhonda Garelick has taken a year's leave of absence in order to accept a prize teaching professorship at Princeton University. For the academic year 2015-2016, she will be the Stanley Kelly, Jr. Professor of Distinguished Teaching in Comparative LIterature at Princeton. The Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium is on hiatus.
