GKSOM Undergraduate Handbook

This handbook is effective August 2016.

Introduction

CREATE. PERFORM. ACHIEVE.

Welcome to the Glenn Korff School of Music.

This is a handbook for our current undergraduate majors and minors in music and dance, and for prospective students who want to dig deeper into how we manage our affairs. It presents information on degree options, academic requirements, policies, and regulations governing the undergraduate degrees offered by the Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We are directed in these matters by the Board of Regents, by UNL's Chancellor and the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, by our College and its Dean, and by our national accrediting agencies, the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).

With UNL as an accredited member of NASM and NASD, the Glenn Korff School of Music is able to offer its undergraduate students an exciting range of opportunities and degree options. Whether a student is considering a dance major, a music education major, a music performance major, a music major combined with a strong secondary emphasis outside of music, or a minor in music or dance, the Glenn Korff School of Music offers a curriculum designed to provide the opportunities necessary for growth in knowledge and artistry in the student's chosen area, taught by faculty members dedicated to the highest standards of excellence.

It is important to remember that it is the undergraduate student’s own responsibility to be aware of policies and requirements as they apply to degree programs. Personnel in the Music Office and faculty advisors are available to answer questions and assist the student. Further information that may be of use to the student can be found in the current on-line UNL Undergraduate Bulletin (http://bulletin.unl.edu/undergraduate) and on MyRed (https://myred.nebraska.edu), where each enrolled student can find their own individualized Degree Audit.

Glenn Korff School of Music announcements concerning academic updates, college-testing information, application deadlines, and the performance calendar and related events are posted in displays on the first floor of Westbrook Music Building and at the School of Music website (arts.unl.edu/music).

Good luck with your music studies! Please let us know if there is further information that you need concerning the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Dance Program

The Dance Program

Students in the Dance Program in the Glenn Korff Schoof of Music are enrolled in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. The Dance Program is under the direction of the Dance Coordinator, who is a Professor of Dance, and it is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD). The program offers the BA degree in Dance and a Minor in Dance. Students must successfully pass an audition for acceptance as a major or minor in Dance.

The UNL Dance Program offers a progression of classes that enables all dance students to take beginning, intermediate and advanced technique classes in a designated order. This sequence trains skilled dancers who are able to participate in dance program concerts and department productions as well as community projects.

The Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in Dance

The BA degree in Dance offers comprehensive training in modern and ballet dance styles. Ballet and modern classes are offered as primary techniques with jazz, tap and musical theatre styles as secondary. Students study a balanced and integrated course load which combines dance with a strong liberal studies core. This program teaches the cultural, theatrical and performing aspects of dance. It emphasizes the development of working methods which are both safe and correct as it encourages students to explore and develop their personal creativity within a contemporary understanding of the dance field. A degree-requirement checksheet and a sample semester-by-semester plan for the BA in Dance are provided in the Appendix at the end of this Handbook.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend technique classes in order to improve technical skill and dance vocabulary. Make-up classes may be allowed at the discretion of the instructor. Poor attendance is grounds for failure of a dance technique course. Any absence beyond the number designated on the syllabus must have a written authorized excuse (e.g., doctor's note, school function) that must be approved by the Dance Coordinator. Assignments or exams can be made-up with a written authorized excuse by the Dance Coordinator. If students are too ill or injured and cannot participate in observations, they are considered absent.

Continuation in Dance Courses

The Dance Coordinator, in consultation with the dance faculty, determines placement progressions for dance students (i.e., when a student may move on to the next level of technique.) Dance majors must maintain a 2.0 in lower division dance courses and 2.5 in upper division dance courses for continued enrollment and advancement. When the grade point average (in dance courses) falls below 2.0, the Dance Coordinator reviews enrollment in dance courses for the following semester. Failure of two or more dance courses in any given semester constitutes automatic suspension from the dance program. Students may be required to refrain from enrolling in dance courses for the immediate semester, or other appropriate action as determined by the Dance Coordinator.

Performances

The concert season includes one major and two minor productions in any of the four performance spaces. A collection of student choreography, works in progress, and classroom demonstrations is presented at the end of each semester.

 The Minor in Dance

Students must successfully pass an audition for acceptance as a dance minor. The Dance Minor requires a total of 18 credit hours, including the following courses:

DANC 159 Intro to History of Dance (3 cr)
DANC 338 Dance Kinesiology & Injury Prevention (3 cr)
DANC 111 Ballet I (2 cr)
DANC 112 Modern Dance I (2 cr)
DANC 211 Ballet II (2 cr)
DANC 212 Modern Dance II (4 cr)
DANC 312 Modern Dance III (2 cr).

Students transferring into the Dance program as a minor after a successful UNL audition, and who are bringing in dance credits from another institution, may find that their transfer credits are sufficient to complete most of the UNL minor. Dance minor students, however, must complete a minimum of 4 credits of Modern Dance technique study (one semester each of DANC 212 and DANC 312) while in residence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Music Degree Programs for Majors

Music Major Degree Programs

Three undergraduate major degree programs in music are available in the Glenn Korff School of Music---the BM, BA, and BME degrees. All three of these require a minimum of 120-credit hours (averaging 15 credits a semesters over eight semesters). Each degree program includes the same number of hours of general education course requirements (UNL's campus-wide ACE program) as well as a common core of shared classes in the discipline of music---lessons, ensembles, theory and musicianship skills, and history--- which must be taken in sequence over the course of the freshman, sophomore, and junior years. These degrees are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Degree-requirement checksheets and sample semester-by-semester plans for the various emphases in the BM in Music are provided in the Appendix at the end of this Handbook. Students can also find the detailed requirements for their degree in the on-line UNL Undergraduate Bulletin (http://bulletin.unl.edu/undergraduate), and in their own individualized Degree Audit in MyRed (https://myred.nebraska.edu).

The Bachelor of Music

The BM degree, designed to prepare students for graduate study and a professional career, is offered in performance, and also in music composition, music theory, and music history. Its music courses and requirements unfold in order over four years, and include many additional credits of music coursework beyond the shared core common to all three degree programs.

Students on all options in the BM degree must take the capstone class, MUSC 445 (Analysis for Performance), to fulfill the university's ACE 10 requirement. In addition, students pursuing the option in performance or composition must do a Senior Recital (MUSR 490), while students pursuing the option in music history or theory must do an undergraduate thesis in the form of a research paper.

The undergraduate thesis for the BM degree in Music History or Theory may be on any historical, theoretical or analytical topic of the student’s choice, upon approval by the faculty adviser, who must be a member of the music history or theory faculty corresponding to the degree pursued. The project is initiated by enrolling for Research Proposal Development (MUSC 384), for one (1) credit, with the project's faculty adviser as the instructor of record. The project is completed during a subsequent semester in which the student is enrolled in Undergraduate Thesis (MUSC 499, for two (2) credits, with the adviser again as the instructor of record. (Honors Program students may enroll in 499H, and they may enroll for three (3) rather than two (2) credits, if they so desire.) It is normally expected that MUSC 384 and MUSC 499 will be taken consecutively in fall and spring semesters of the same academic year. Completion of the project will require regular consultation with the adviser throughout the course of the project. From the beginning of MUSC 384 to the end of MUSC 499, the student will work to complete the project in stages according to a timeline established in consultation with the adviser.

The Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Music

The BA degree in music can normally be completed in four years. Its course requirements in music essentially just consist of the shared three-year core for all music degrees. The degree has considerably more elective space than the BM, and it also requires a minor or a second major. This degree can be used to prepare students either for graduate study and a professional career in music, or for a wide variety of other kinds of educational and vocational paths.

The BA degree in music offers options based on performance area, and also a declared emphasis performance or research. The BA with performance emphasis culminates with a recital and the BA with research emphasis culminates in the presentation of a final written research project. At the end of the fourth semester BA students, in consultation with their academic advisor and the student's applied area teacher, select either the performance or research emphasis.

If the performance empasis is chosen, the student begins preparation for a half-recital (20-30 minutes) normally given during the sixth (i.e., the last required) semester of applied music study.

If the research emphasis is selected, the student then must find a research project advisor from among the music faculty. This faculty advisor is chosen by the student in consultation with their applied instructor and the Head of the Academic Studies (Theory/History/Composition) Area. The project may be on any research topic of the student’s choice, upon approval by the faculty advisor. The project is initiated by enrolling for Research Proposal Development (MUSC 384) for one (1) credit, with the project’s faculty advisor as the instructor of record. It is completed during a subsequent semester in which the student is enrolled in Special Topics in Music (MUSC 398) for one (1) or two (2) credits, with the same adviser again as the instructor of record. It is normally expected that the two-semester sequence of MUSC 384 and MUSC 398 will be taken consecutively in the fall and spring semesters of the same academic year. Completion of the project requires regular consultation with the adviser throughout the two semesters of the project. During this period the student works to complete the project in stages according to a timeline established in consultation with the advisor.

The university's ACE 10 requirement can be fulfilled within the BA in music following the research emphasis by taking MUSC 398 for 2 credits, so that MUSC 384+MUSC 398 together become a two-semester, 3-credit experience.

Students on the BA in music following the performance emphasis do not have an ACE 10 experience embedded in their music requirements. They can fulfill this rquirement by electing to take MUSC 445, or by finding an ACE 10 course in the area of study of their minor or second major.

The Bachelor of Music Education

The BME degree is a professional degree, which, upon successful completion, certifies the student to teach vocal and instrumental music, K-12. It shares the common three-year core of music classes with the BM and BA degrees. Under the right circumstances it is possible to complete this 120-credit degree (including the semester of student teaching) in four years, but since the BME degree is in many respects the equivalent of a double major in music and in education, students will often elect to spend five years to complete it.

All BME students take MUED 403 (Student Teaching Seminar) as their capstone class and to fulfill the university's ACE 10 requirement.

The Music Minors

There are four different kinds of minors involving music.  Three of them require that students successfully pass a performance audition. The most popular of these is the Minor in Music. The two kinds of Musical Theatre minor require enrolled students to already be majors in either music or theatre, and to pass a vocal audition and be accepted on the level of a minor in voice. The Minor in Music Technology requires no audition and is open to all interested undergraduates at UNL.

The Minor in Music

Students must successfully pass a performance audition for acceptance as a Minor in Music. The Music Minor degree requires a total of 18 credit hours, including 4 semesters of applied music (4 cr.), 4 semesters of approved ensemble (4 cr.), first semester music theory and aural skills (MUSC 165 [3 cr.] and MUSC 165A [1 cr.]) and 6 additional credits in the music curriculum. A checksheet of requirements for this degree is provided in the Appendix at the end of this Handbook. For the current adviser for this degree, please enquire at the Main Office in Westbrook Music Building.

The Minor in Music Technology

No audition is required for the Minor in Music Technology. It is open to all interested undergraduates at UNL. The Minor in Music Technology degree requires a total of 19 credit hours, including courses in computational reasoning, MIDI, and digital audio, and electives in technology and in Digital Arts. A checksheet of requirements for this degree is provided in the Appendix at the end of this Handbook. The adviser for this minor is Professor Brian Moore (bmoore1@unl.edu).

The Minor in Music Theatre (for music majors)

The Music Theatre Minor for Music Majors degree requires a total of 25 credit hours, including 20 credits in the theatre core curriculum and 5 credits in dance. A checksheet of requirements for this degree is provided in the Appendix at the end of this Handbook. The adviser for this minor is Professor Alisa Belflower (abelflower2@unl.edu).

The Minor in Music Theatre (for theatre majors)

Theatre majors must successfully pass a vocal performance audition at the level of a Minor in Music in order to enroll in this degree. The Music Theatre Minor for Theatre Majors requires a total of 26 credit hours, including 5 semesters of applied music (5 cr.), 4 credits of ensembles (2 semesters of choir and 2 credits of "productions"), 9 credits in the music core curriculum, 5 credits in Dance (movement courses), and 3 credits of THEA 455-Music Theatre & Techniques. Further, it is the policy of the Glenn Korff School of Music that students enrolled in applied lessons in a given semester must also be enrolled in a vocal ensemble that semester. A checksheet of requirements for this degree is provided in the Appendix at the end of this Handbook. The adviser for this minor is Professor Alisa Belflower (abelflower2@unl.edu).

Post-Baccalaureate Initial Teacher Certification in Music

Post-Baccalaureate Initial Teacher Certification in Music

This teacher certification program is not a degree program, but rather an individualized program of study, based on past coursework in an undergraduate degree already earned, leading to initial teacher certification in music. The coordinator of post-baccalaureate teacher certification in music is Professor Robert Woody, Glenn Korff School of Music, 354 Westbrook Music Building, UNL, Lincoln, NE 68588-0100 (phone 402.472.6231; e-mail rwoody2@unl.edu).

Academic Advising

Academic Advising

Each major and minor in the Glenn Korff School of Music is assigned an academic advisor who is a member of the music faculty. Music majors can find the name of their adviser in MyRed. This advisor helps the student plan an appropriate, individualized academic program. further, lesson call numbers must be obtained from the adviser in person each semester.

Incoming freshmen are initially advised during New Student Enrollment. From that time forward, currently enrolled students should consult with their assigned faculty adviser regularly, especially during the Pre-Registration period each fall and spring (approximately the ninth week of each semester), and during the Priority Registration period immediately after Fall Break and Spring Break. Music students are strongly encouraged to complete their registration during Priority Registration rather than waiting for the General Registration period that follows.

Waiver of Credits for Competency in Core Courses

Students who demonstrate mastery of Music Core course content (typically MUSC 131, 132 or 165; MUAP 231, 232) will have the appropriate required degree courses waived. However, the total minimum 120 credit hour requirement for the degree must still be satisfied, and the student may use University credit from any department to satisfy the 120-hour requirement.

Advanced Placement in Music Credit

Students who have completed the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Exam in Music are given credit for music courses at UNL according to the following guidelines:

Students who have earned a score of 5 on the College Board’s Advanced Placement Exam in Music Theory are given credit for MUSC 165, MUSC 165A, MUSC 166, and MUSC 166A.

Students who have earned a score of 4 on the Advanced Placement exam are given credit for MUSC 165 and MUSC 165A.

International Baccalaureate Credit

Students who have studied music within the International Baccalaureate Program are given credit for music courses at UNL according to the following guidelines:

Any student who has completed the Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL) requirements in music, and has achieved a score of 6 or 7 on the Listening Paper Section B, Parts A (Aural Perception), B (Technical Language) and C (Structural Analysis), are given credit for MUSC 160 (Music as Art, Discipline, and Profession - 3 crs.), MUSC 165 (Music Theory I - 2 crs.) and MUSC 166 (Music Theory II - 3 crs). They will have the opportunity to earn credit for MUSC 165A and MUSC 166A by passing an aural skills exam administered by music theory faculty.

Transfer Credit Policy

Students who want to bring in college credit from other institutions should have up-to-date transcripts sent to UNL's campuswide Office of Admissions (not to the Glenn Korff School of Music) to begin the transfer-credit evaluation process.

The following is used as a guideline for the evaluation of transfer credits that are less than five years old:

If a transfer student has successfully completed (grade C or above) approved transfer credits which are equivalent to UNL area requirements in terms of number of credit hours and scope of content, that area is considered completed at the discretion of the chief degree program advisor.

For approved transfer credits which are lacking equivalency in either number of credit hours, scope of content, or grade received to UNL area requirements in applied music, ballet, modern dance, music theory, sight singing/aural skills, and keyboard skills, the number of transfer credits accepted and placement in the UNL area are determined by audition/proficiency tests administered by designated area faculty.

For approved transfer credits which are lacking equivalency in other music or dance areas (history, composition, performance, and ensembles); the number of transfer credits accepted are determined by the chief degree program advisor.

All music coursework which is more than five years old must be validated by an audition or competency examination given by designated area faculty.

After a successful UNL audition, music minor students must complete a minimum of 2 credits (two semesters) of applied music study at the 200 level and 2 credits (two semesters) participation in an approved UNL music ensemble or ensembles while in residence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Credit for Re-admitted Students

Students pursuing any music degree program must be formally readmitted following an absence of one year or more (i.e., students needing to be readmitted are those who have not taken at least one course that applies toward meeting their UNL music degree requirements during a 12-month period). Students seeking re-admittance will follow the Bulletin in effect at the time they are re-admitted.

If the student has taken UNL courses which are less than five years old and those courses have not been altered substantially, those courses still apply to the readmitted student's program at the discretion of the chief degree program advisor.

If the student has taken UNL courses which are more than five years old, the courses must be validated by an audition or competency examination given by designated area faculty* before they can be applied to the readmitted student's program.

Honors Program Requirements and Music Students

The University Honors Program requires its members to take a fall-freshman-year 189H seminar and four additional honors classes (ideally, one per semester) for a total of 15 credits in their first two years, and then a 395H seminar and two additional honors classes (ideally, one per year) for a total of 9 credits in their next two years. To fulfill this requirement, the Glenn Korff School of Music suggests the following options for its Honors Program students in music and dance:

Option I: Honors-designated Courses (strongly recommended)
1. For first- and second-year students: established Honors-designated three-credit General Education (ACE) courses.

2. For first- and second-year students: other Honors-designated three-credit classes.

3. For third- and fourth-year students: three-credit reading courses with Honors designation, undertaken with their thesis adviser, that are devoted to the preparation of the senior Honors thesis.

Option II: Contracting
If an undergraduate music or dance major cannot schedule a designated Honors class or class-section in a given semester, then the possibility exists to take a regular class for Honors credit by contracting with the professor. Contracting works with classes both inside and outside the major, and involves paperwork that is handled through the Honors Program office. Students must contract for three credits in a given semester, so if a class being considered for contracting is only a one-credit or two-credit class (for instance, some music lessons, ensembles, and literature/pedagogy classes), then one or more additional classes have to be contracted in the same semester to yield a total of three credits. (This is doable, but has usually proved to be an awkward solution.)
NOTE: A Course Credit Hour Override will not be granted to adjust a one or two-credit course to make the course a three-credit course.

School of Music courses recommended for contracting for Honors credit are (in order of most to least preferable):
1. Three-credit classes in music and dance with alpha-prefixes other than MUAP, MUCO, or MUDC.
2. Applied instruction in the student’s major performance area (Violin, Flute, Voice, Composition, Dance, etc.).
3. Ensembles

When contracting, the University Honors Program stipulates that for a course to qualify for the honors designation, a class must have additional experiences that enhance the student’s knowledge of the subject. The individual student must negotiate with the faculty member what will constitute the additional honors experiences and record this in a contract.

Recommended additional experiences that enhance the student’s knowledge of the subject, all of equal quality and effort, are (in order of most to least preferable):
1. A research component, such as a paper or presentation.
2. Additional work, such as extra repertoire or choreography or extra performance(s).

Courses

For current dates, deadlines, and specific registration instructions for courses, please consult the most current official on-line University of Nebraska-Lincoln Schedule of Classes, which is embedded in the "Search For Classes" function off the main menu in MyRed (https://myred.nebraska.edu).

Ensembles

Auditions are required for many of our ensembles, and registration may be controlled by additional permission codes. Contact the Glenn Korff School of Music for audition information.  See the course instructor for permission codes.

Applied Music Studio Assignments

All students must successfully pass an audition before any applied studio assignments (i.e., private lessons) are considered. Following a successful audition, students are assigned to applied faculty studios according to availability of space (faculty load). Registration is initiated by obtaining the applied course number and call number from the student’s advisor. (The four-digit call number for lessons is suppressed in the registration system, so you must go to your adviser in person to get it.) Students are limited to one major applied area (a single 2- 3 credit hour applied lesson per semester).

In the case where there are multiple studios in a single performance area, such as is the case for piano and voice, students may request a specific assignment, and a request for a specific professor is honored whenever possible. Students not pursuing a music degree or music as a minor field of concentration are, by necessity, given lowest priority for applied study.

NOTE: Students not pursuing music degree requirements are assessed an $80 fee in addition to the credit hour charge for applied lessons.

Students may continue, but are not required, to take applied music once they have their degree-required hours. (Faculty load may be a consideration under these circumstances.)

Applied Lesson Registration for Undeclared Students Intending to be Music Majors

Students who have been accepted as music majors by successful audition, but who cannot enter the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts for other academic reasons, will be allowed to register for applied music lessons during their first academic semester at UNL as if they were a major, that is, for two credit hours using the major applied course number. Advising appropriate to each such student's intended major will be provided in the School of Music during the first semester only. In subsequent semesters, undeclared students remaining under the supervision of the Explore Center who want to register for applied music lessons must register for one credit hour only, using the alpha-prefix course designation for non majors (MUNM). If these students become eligible to enter the College at a later date, they will need to audition again to determine their applied standing. No further advising will be provided by the Glenn Korff School of Music until the student becomes a major or minor in the program.

Students who have not been accepted as music majors by audition, but are otherwise eligible to enter the College, may study applied music at the minor level or the non-major applied level (as audition scores and studio space permit) during their first academic semester at UNL. Advising appropriate to students' intended major will be provided in the Glenn Korff School of Music during the first semester only. No further advising will be provided by the Glenn Korff School of Music until the student becomes a major or minor in the program.

Change of Applied Music Studio Assignments

Occasionally a student will request a change of applied music instructor. Specific procedures are in place to help students who want to change studios, and information about these procedures, along with a form to request the change, is available in the Music Office. If a studio change is being considered when obtaining applied call numbers for the next semester, the student should sign up for lessons with the present teacher. Then, if the request for a change of studio is approved, the Music Office sends through the schedule adjustment form for the student. (A change in studio assignment results in a change of section for the course, and section changes are made free of charge.)

Transfer Audition Times and Components

Transfer students (whether from inside or outside UNL), who are seeking to become a music major or minor, must pass a live audition. All auditions must include: (1) adjudication by at least 2 members of the faculty, (2) administration of all diagnostic tests where relevant (e.g, theory, aural skills, keyboard skills), and (3) an advising session (including preliminary evaluation of transfer credit) with the chief advisor of the degree program into which the student intends to matriculate (BM, BA, BME, minor).
NOTE: If a student has previously auditioned and was not accepted, a minimum of 5 months must pass between auditions. Students who want to begin studies in a fall semester may audition during the preceding January or February audition days.

Registration for Independent Study

Undergraduate music students who want to enroll in an independent study or special topics course in music using the MUSC 398 or MUSC 498 or MUED 496 course numbers must seek the permission of the Undergraduate Committee to do so. (Under most circumstances MUSC 398 is the course number to use.) Only after approval can the suppressed four-digit call number for registration be issued. Students must request this permission either during the prior semester, or else on or before the close of the “add period” at the beginning of the given semester.

Each student must, in consultation with the instructor, complete the “Independent Study/Special Topics Course Contract” available on the Glenn Korff School of Music website (arts.unl.edu/music) under "Current Students" under "Forms."  This form must be filled out, printed out in hard copy, signed and dated, and presented to the Chair of the Undergraduate Committee. (It can be left with the Undergraduate Secretary in WMB rm 113). The Committee then reviews the entire proposal, with particular attention to the question of whether the amount of coursework required is congruent with the number of credit hours requested. Students will be notified by e-mail with the correct call number for registration if the contract is approved. If the contract is not approved, students will be advised by e-mail regarding revisions needed, which should be made with the help of the instructor.

Undergraduate music students who want to enroll in MUSC 499 or MUSC 499H ("Undergraduate Thesis") can obtain the four-digit call number for registration from the Undergraduate Secretary in WMB rm 113.

The Large Ensemble Policy

THE LARGE ENSEMBLE POLICY

To fulfill minimum degree requirements, BM students must have 8 semesters of large ensemble, BME students must have 7, BA students must have 6, and Music Minors must have 4.

CONNECTION TO APPLIED STUDY

Lessons and large ensembles are linked. All full-time (12 credit hours or more) undergraduate students taking applied music at UNL must audition and enroll for 1 credit in a large ensemble under its MUDC call number (MUNM for elective students) during each semester of applied study unless their instructor determines that they are not qualified to do so.

Part-time students who are taking applied lessons are not required to co-enroll in a large ensemble.

This linkage of lessons and large ensembles is a rule in effect for all majors, minors, and non-majors, with the exception on occasion of piano, organ, and guitar students. Piano, organ, and guitar students may earn some of their required large ensemble credits by participation for a letter grade in chamber ensembles using the MUDC 352 call number (see below).

Further, there is a stipulation that narrows the choice of ensemble. If students taking applied music are on a School of Music scholarship, then they must perform in an appropriate large ensemble appearing on the List of Approved Ensembles (for which, see below) that is specifically related to their applied area. (BA students taking applied piano, organ, and guitar are an exception, for which, see below.)

After music majors have completed the minimum number of semesters of lessons and MUDC ensembles required for their degree, it may be that they will continue taking lessons, and if so, they must continue to co-enroll in a large ensemble. Further, BME students need a minimum of 7 semesters of MUDC ensemble but only a minimum of 6 semesters of lessons.

If students stop taking lessons at any point after meeting the minimum degree requirements, they still may participate in any ensemble listed below in the List of Approved Ensembles. There is an exception that narrows the choice of ensemble: if a student is still on a School of Music scholarship, that student has to participate in an ensemble related to their performing area as long as they continue to take lessons.

CREDITS FOR ENSEMBLES

The first ensemble must be taken for credit. Thus all undergraduate students participating in one or more ensembles in a given semester (whether the students are full-time music majors, music minors, or non-majors, and whether or not taking applied studio lessons) must register for a minimum of 1 credit of ensemble at the 200 or 400 level, whether using the MUDC or MUCO or MUNM alpha-prefix.

Ensembles may be repeated for credit in subsequent semesters.

Credit for more than one ensemble in a given semester: All music majors and minors may enroll in their second and any additional large ensembles in a given semester for 0 credits under the MUCO 00-level number or for 1 credit under the MUCO 400/200-level number. Non-majors may enroll in their second and any additional large ensembles for 0 credits under the MUCO 00-level number or for 1 credit under the MUNM 400/200 number.

Excess ensemble credit: Credit for those ensembles (MUDC or MUCO) taken by music majors and minors in excess of minimum degree requirements will normally count outside the music portion of the degree. They will simply be free elective credit toward the university's 120-credit requirement.

There is an exception that applies only inside the music requirements of the BM degree: In the BM degree, a maximum of two excess MUCO credits may be applied towards that degree's Music Elective requirement.

The two MUDC problem: Students must never enroll for two MUDC ensembles in the same semester. If a student accidentally does this, the second credit is not counted towards any degree requirement. Therefore, this is a mistake with financial consequences, and it needs to be corrected promptly by changing the second ensemble to MUCO.

CALL NUMBERS FOR ENSEMBLES

200- and 400-level numbers

The 200-level ensemble numbers are to be used by first and second year students. The 400-level numbers are to be used by undergraduates in their third year and above. The 00-level numbers may be used by students at any time for second and additional ensembles.

MUDC or MUCO or MUNM or MUEN

There is the potential for confusion or outright error when self-registering for ensembles using MyRed, the UNL on-line class registration system. It is essential for every student to take special care to register for the right level of ensemble under the correct alpha-prefix and call number and credit level. Particular care must be taken over the alpha-prefix.

Ensembles for undergraduates are designated as MUDC, MUCO, or MUNM, and have course numbers at the 00, 200, and 400 levels. Thus each ensemble may have up to seven call numbers for undergraduates (MUCO 00-level, MUDC/MUCO/MUNM 200-level and MUDC/MUCO/MUNM 400-level).

Note: There is also a MUEN prefix, but this is for graduate students only, at the 800 and 00 levels.

The MUDC call number prefix (Music Ensembles for Degree Credit) is exclusively for use by music majors and minors. It is used to identify the ensemble that is being used by a student to fulfill their large ensemble degree requirement in music in a given semester.

Music majors and minors must register for one and only one MUDC ensemble per semester, until they have reached the required minimum number for their degree (i.e., 8 semesters for the BM 6 semesters for the BA, 7 semesters for the BME, 4 semesters for the minor). If a student accidentally takes two MUDC ensembles in the same semester, the second is not counted at all.

The MUCO call number prefix (Music Ensembles for Elective Credit Only) is also used by music majors and minors, and also, on occasion, by non-majors. Music majors and minors use the MUCO alpha-prefix for their second ensemble and any additional ensembles in which they enroll in a given semester. They may also use the MUCO prefix to enroll for credit for ensembles in semesters late in their program after their minimum required number of large ensembles has been reached. The MUCO prefix is used by non-majors for second and additional ensembles at the 00 (zero-credit) level.

MUCO ensembles may be taken for 1 credit at the 200 or 400 level by majors and minors. The second ensemble and all additional ensembles taken in a given semester may instead be taken by majors, minors, and non-majors for 0 credit under the MUCO 00-level call number.

The MUNM call number prefix is used by all undergraduate students who are not music majors or minors when enrolling for their first ensemble. These students must enroll at the 400/200 level for 1 credit for their first ensemble. Non-majors may take their second and any additional ensembles for zero credit under the MUCO 00-level number.

SPECIFIC LARGE ENSEMBLE ASSIGNMENTS FOR MUSIC MAJORS

The Universal Large Choral Ensemble Requirement

All music majors must sing in a large choral ensemble for one semester, and they must use the choral ensemble that semester as their primary large ensemble, enrolling under its MUDC 200-level call number. (During this singing semester, instrumentalists must also enroll for their large instrumental ensemble; for this second large ensemble they must use the MUCO alpha-prefix.) As a general rule, music majors should accomplish this vocal music requirement in their first year of study if at all possible, as detailed below.

Fall Freshman Year Music Major Ensemble Policy for MUDC ensembles

In the fall of their freshman year, all music majors who are applied voice students---and all music majors who are applied piano, organ, guitar, and composition students---must register for Varsity Chorus (MUDC 243) if they are men and University Chorale (MUDC 246) if they are women. Any student facing an irremediable afternoon time conflict (such as, but not limited to, overlapping ensemble rehearsal schedules, science labs, or athletic practice) may take All Collegiate Choir-City Campus (MUDC 241) instead.

In the fall of their freshman year, all majors who are applied string students must register for Symphony Orchestra (MUDC 247).

In the fall of their freshman year, all majors who are applied wind and percussion students must initially register for the UNL Symphonic Band (MUDC 248B), or the Cornhusker Marching Band (MUDC 248E), or the UNL Jazz Orchestra (MUDC 253A), or the UNL Big Band (MUDC 253B). This assignment will usually be made at the time of New Student Enrollment (NSE) during the summer.

All freshmen who initially enroll in the Cornhusker Marching Band must also initially enroll in a second large ensemble. This additional assignment will usually be made at the time of New Student Enrollment during the summer.

Fall first semester BME applied wind and percussion students who anticipate being in the Cornhusker Marching Band must enroll for that group for one credit as their MUDC ensemble. They must then also enroll in Symphonic Band or one of the jazz large ensembles for one credit as a MUCO ensemble.

Fall first semester BM and BA applied wind and percussion students who anticipate being in the Cornhusker Marching Band must enroll for one credit in Symphonic Band or one of the jazz large ensembles as their MUDC ensemble, and they must enroll for one credit in Marching Band as their MUCO ensemble.

IMPORTANT NOTE: CHANGES OFTEN HAVE TO BE MADE TO ENSEMBLE ASSIGNMENTS during Week 1, on account of audition results, fall repertoire choices, the need to balance instrumentation, and the option for some students to take their second ensemble for zero credit. This drop/add process is the responsibility of the student and must be done promptly, before the close of Late Registration on MyRed in Week 2.

---If a wind or percussion major is re-assigned in Week 1 to a different primary large ensemble (for example, to Wind Ensemble or Symphony Orchestra), that student must immediately drop their original MUDC or MUCO ensemble on MyRed and re-enroll for MUDC or MUCO credit in the other ensemble.

---Students who are eligible to enroll in their MUCO ensemble for zero (0) credit have to change from 1 credit to 0 credit in Week 1 via a drop/add on MyRed, using not just the correct new class code but also an individual permission code received from the ensemble director.

Spring Freshman Year Music Major Ensemble Policy for MUDC ensembles

In the spring of their freshman year, all majors who are applied voice students must register for Varsity Chorus (MUDC 243) if they are men and University Chorale (MUDC 246) if they are women.

In the spring of their freshman year, all majors who are applied wind, string, and percussion students should register for Varsity Chorus (MUDC 243) if they are men and University Chorale (MUDC 246) if they are women, making this semester their "singing semester." Any student facing an irremediable afternoon time conflict (such as, but not limited to, overlapping ensemble rehearsal schedules, science labs, or athletic practice) may take the Thursday evening All Collegiate Choir-City Campus (MUDC 241) instead. (During this singing semester, instrumentalists must also enroll for their large instrumental ensemble, using the MUCO alpha-prefix.)

In the spring of their freshman year, all majors who are applied piano, organ, guitar, and composition students should enroll in the MUDC ensemble appropriate to their performance area, as outlined below.

Requirements for for all Music Majors registering for large ensembles after their first year

Once beyond the particular requirements of the freshman year, every full-time music major (12 credit hours or more) enrolled in applied music lessons in a given semester must also perform in an ensemble from the List of Approved Ensembles that semester, using the MUDC prefix. (BA/BM piano, organ, and guitar players may also use MUDC 440A, 440B, 352.) The ensembles listed below are the only ensembles that will fulfill the degree requirements. Remember, also, that students on music scholarships must enroll in an ensemble specifically appropriate to their area of performance studies.

Students in the music education degree program are exempt from large ensemble participation during the semester in which they student teach.

Registering for large ensembles after the first year

During the spring semester of the freshman year, at the time of Priority Registration for the fall of year two, music majors should enroll in one of the Group I large ensembles appropriate to their performance area. If this enrollment then needs to be changed on account of preferences and circumstances (including the recommendations of ensemble directors and studio teachers, and the results of auditions), the student should promptly drop the current ensemble and enroll for another by the end of the first week of classes in the fall.

Chamber Music and the Large Ensemble Requirement

Majors who are applied piano, organ, and guitar students may earn some of their required large ensemble credits by participation for a letter grade in chamber ensembles using the MUDC 352 call number. No other music majors or minors may use chamber music to fulfill their large ensemble requirement. All students must initially enroll in chamber music under the MUCO 52 call number. The switch to MUDC 352 for applied piano, organ, and guitar students is handled administratively on their behalf by the instructor. It is the student's responsibility to work with the course instructor for chamber music to make sure that they have been correctly enrolled into the proper section of the chamber music class.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Scholarships & Financial Aid

All forms of financial aid are intended primarily to underwrite the education of the student. They may take into account financial need, or instead, be merit-based. Scholarships and financial aid are available for qualified undergraduate music students both from the university and, separately, from the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Financial Help From the University

For information and advice concerning scholarships and financial aid from the university, including scholarships offered by UNL for freshman students, transfer students, and current undergraduate students ("Upperclass Scholarships"), as well as other kinds of financial assistance (such as, but not limited to, Pell Grants, University Loans, other public and private scholarships, Guaranteed Student Loans, Job Location and Development, Work Study and Campus Employment), students and prospective students should contact the UNL Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid (Room 17, Canfield Administration Building, 402-472-2030; financialaid@un.edu). The Office website is located at http://www.unl.edu/scholfa/.

Glenn Korff School of Music Scholarships

The criteria followed in awarding a Glenn Korff School of Music Scholarship are exclusively merit-based, and include academic excellence and musicianship. As a rule, Glenn Korff School of Music scholarships are awarded only to first-time-in-college (FTIC) students and transfers who audition on or before the final Audition Day in February each year. All students who successfully pass an audition for admission to the Glenn Korff School of Music are automatically considered for scholarship aid from the School. Continuing music students, upon the recommendation of their applied studio teacher, may be considered for new or increased scholarship aid from the School of Music during the same decision period for all aid from the School that immediately follows the final Audition Day. Students requiring additional financial underwriting and assistance due to serious financial need should apply at the UNL Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid.

All scholarship awards are made by the Director of the Glenn Korff School of Music upon recommendation by the faculty. The stipulations governing the awards, including the duties and obligations attached thereto, are determined by the Director in consultation with the appropriate University of Nebraska official(s) or group(s). Scholarship support for each music student is reviewed each semester of the year.

Scholarship offers from the Glenn Korff School of Music go out to students in the first week of April. A reply to accept or decline the offer must be made by May 1. Students awarded a Glenn Korff School of Music Scholarship should expect half the amount of the total annual award to be applied to the tuition for each academic semester. Exceptions to this procedure are rare and are authorized by the Director of the Glenn Korff School of Music on a case-by-case basis.

As policy, the Glenn Korff School of Music typically provides undergraduate music scholarship support for not more than eight (8) semesters for FTIC students in our BM, BA, and BME degree programs. UNL music students who cannot complete their degrees in 8 semesters for financial reasons are encouraged strongly to inquire with the UNL Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for additional financial help.

Attendance

Classes
Students are expected to regularly attend all lectures, recitations, and laboratories. The University of Nebraska has no regulation which permits cuts. It is the responsibility of the student to abide by attendance rules an instructor may prescribe and should clear any absence with the instructor.

Notice of illness, injury, or hospitalization may be provided by the Student Health Service, a family physician, or the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. For unusual circumstances, a temporary leave of absence may be obtained from the Dean of the College or the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. However, neither absence nor notification of absence relieves the student of meeting all course requirements.

Applied Lessons

The UNL policy on class attendance applies to applied lessons as well. The highly specialized nature of individualized instruction and professional etiquette require that the instructor be notified in advance of any absence. Make-up lessons are given only for bona fide reasons, such as certifiable illness. Please check with the individual instructor regarding any additional stipulations.

Ensembles
As with lessons, the UNL policy on attendance applies to ensembles. Since participation in a rehearsal cannot be “made-up,” and professional ethics dictate professional behavior in the discipline, ensemble directors expect attendance at all rehearsals and performances.

Glenn Korff School of Music Convocation – MUSR 068 Recital Attendance

All music majors are required to register for and pass a specified number of semesters of MUSR 68 ("Recital Attendance"). The BM degree and the BME degree require seven (7) semesters of MUSC 68, and the BA requires six (6) semesters.

Informally called convocation or "convo", this class is a forum for performances by students and guest artists that was established in the belief that music students should not only be interested in their own performances, but also recognize the value of listening to the performances of others and learning about various performing media. It also provides an opportunity to make announcements about administrative matters to the entire undergraduate student body, and provides a time when faculty and students together can consider issues of academic and musical importance. The class meets regularly on Thursday afternoons and also requires attendance at a specified number of events held on other days and at other times. A grade of NO PASS received in MUSR 68 can only be removed during the subsequent semester, following which, it will be necessary to repeat the course in its entirety.

Students pursuing a BM or BA degree who are enrolled in MUSR 68 attend each semester a specified number of Glenn Korff School of Music Thursday afternoon convocations and a specified number of additional events from an approved list distributed to the class at the beginning of the term.

Students pursuing a BME degree who are enrolled in MUSR 68 attend each semester a specified number of Glenn Korff School of Music Thursday afternoon convocations, a specified number of additional events from an approved list distributed to the class at the beginning of the term, and a specified number of music education convocations.

Minors in Music are required to take two semesters of MUSR 68, which should be taken during semesters when they also are enrolled in applied studio lessons. They will attend both semesters a specified number of Glenn Korff School of Music Thursday afternoon convocations and and a specified number of additional events from an approved list distributed to the class at the beginning of the term.

Recital Performance

Enrollment

Students must be concurrently enrolled in major applied lessons during the semester the recital is given.

Recital Requirements by Area

As required by their degree program, students must successfully complete a Junior and/or Senior recital that meets the expectations and requirements of the Faculty in the student’s Applied Area.

Recital Requirements By Area

Brass/Percussion/Woodwinds/Strings/Keyboard

The Junior or Senior Recital will consist of representative solo repertoire of the instrument, in varied genres and styles, selected in consultation with the student's applied professor. Chamber music may be incorporated into the recital, but is not required. The minimum length for each recital is 40 minutes and the maximum length is 50 minutes (in terms of actual performing time).  The time available for each recital includes 15 minutes of preparation time beforehand in the recital hall and a maximum time of 60 minutes in the hall for the recital itself (i.e., from the time the student first walks onto the stage to the finish when the student walks off-stage after the last number).

Voice

Recital repertoire is to reflect the individuality of the singer, and is to consist of selections from the art song repertoire. The recital is to include four languages (English, Italian, German, and French) and represent a variety of musical periods and styles. The musical portion of each recital will have a minimum length of:

  • All BA & BME recitals and BM junior recitals: 30 minutes
  • All BM senior recitals: 40 minutes

The maximum length of any undergraduate vocal recital is 50 minutes (in terms of actual performing time).  The time available for each recital includes 15 minutes of preparation time beforehand in the recital hall and a maximum time of 60 minutes in the hall for the recital itself (i.e., from the time the student first walks onto the stage to the finish when the student walks off-stage after the last number).

Should a voice student wish to perform a recital not in compliance with the guidelines above, the student may petition the voice area for an exception. Exceptions must be granted in the semester before the proposed recital's performance.

Musical theatre and operatic repertoire may be performed in addition to the above minimum requirements.

RECITAL PROCEDURES

Students who want to give a solo or chamber recital in Glenn Korff School of Music facilities, whether that recital is for degree credit or not, must follow certain rules and regulations. Off-campus recitals by School of Music students may be bound by certain stipulations as well.

Enrollment
Students must be concurrently enrolled in major applied lessons during the semester in which they give a degree recital. Non-degree recitals do not require enrollment, unless for some reason the student wishes to have the recital on their transcript.

Recital Course Numbers
The course number MUSR 90 (for zero credits) is used for the Junior Year degree recital by BM and BA students on the performance track.
The course number MUSR 91 (for zero credits) may be used by any student for an additional (non-degree) recital that will be recorded on a student's transcript.
The course number MUSR 490 (for 1-3 credits) is used primarily for the senior-year degree recital in applied music required by the BM degree in performance.
BME students may use MUSR 90 or MUSR 91 or MUSR 490 for their required degree recital.

Recital Sign-Up
Students doing a degree recital must sign up and register the date whether or not the recital will be on campus.
For fall-semester recitals, students and faculty are provided at the very beginning of the semester with a list of possible recital dates in either Kimball Recital Hall or Westbrook Recital Hall (WMB rm 119), and recital sign-up is scheduled for Week 3.
For spring-semester recitals, a list of possible dates is posted a few weeks before the end of the semester, and sign-up begins in Week 15 (the last week of classes) and run through the end of finals week.
Priority in scheduling goes to graduate students over undergraduates, and to degree recitals over non-degree recitals.

Sign-up itself unfolds over three days:
On the first day of recital sign up, graduate students may sign up for a recital for degree credit only.
On the second day of recital sign up, undergraduate students may sign up for a recital for degree credit only.
On the third day of recital sign up, any student may sign up for a non-degree credit recital.

On the appropriate sign-up day, students come to staff member Mark Nealeigh (WMB rm 119.1) with the date and time they wish to reserve. He prints out a contract with that information, takes their recital fee ($25 on campus, $5 off campus) and gives them a packet of recital information. To confirm the recital and hold the date, students must return a signed contract to Mr. Nealeigh by the due date specified on the contract. The packet contains a variety of essential information, including deadlines for the manufacture and formatting of programs.

Grading Policy and Student Evaluations

GRADING POLICY
All Glenn Korff School of Music courses should have a syllabus articulating a specific grading policy.

The grading scale used by the University of Nebraska is:

A+ = 4.0
B+ = 3.33
C+ = 2.33
D+ = 1.33
A = 4.0
B = 3.0
C = 2.0
D = 1.0
A- = 3.67
B- = 2.67
C- = 1.67
D- = 0.67

A letter grade of W (withdrew in good standing), I (incomplete), P (passing with a C or better), and N (no pass) may also be given. W, I, P, and N are not assigned grade points and are not used in computation of a student’s grade point average. A designation of “No Report” is simply the absence of any letter grade indication.

Applied music lessons and degree required music courses are not offered for the Pass/No Pass basis. Students should consult with their appropriate academic advisor before registering for any course with the Pass/No Pass option.

Grades lower than C earned at UNL or transferred from other schools cannot be applied toward requirements in a major, but may be applied toward total hours.

A student who fails to maintain a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) will be placed on academic probation or suspended.

Important: For additional information concerning grading policies (use of the grade Incomplete and No Report, the Pass/No pass option, etc.), and drop/add policies, refer to the current Undergraduate Bulletin, or the published Schedule of Classes.

GRADING APPEALS
The Glenn Korff School of Music Grading Appeals Committee is appointed on an ad hoc basis by the Director. This committee is one in a sequence of steps available to any student who feels that he/she has been unfairly graded (1. Talk to the instructor; 2.
talk to your advisor; 3. talk to the Chair of the Undergraduate Committee; 4. Talk to the Director of the Glenn Korff School of Music; 5. go to the School of Music Grading Appeals Committee; 6. go to the college grading appeals committee). Most problems are resolved following step one, a talk with the instructor concerned. If the student is still dissatisfied, the student should go step by step through the procedural sequence.

If the appeal must go to the School of Music Grading Appeals Committee, the Committee may not only review the case but also interview both the student and the instructor. Following consultations with the parties involved, the committee renders a decision, including recommendations. If the student is still dissatisfied, the student's final option is to take the case to the College Grading Appeals Committee.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts policy on cheating is:
  1. Students are expected to be honest in all aspects of their academic work.
  2. Academic judgments about a student’s work (including questions of cheating) are the responsibility if the instructor. (Normally disagreements are resolved by means of a conference between the student and the instructor.)
  3. When a student has been judged by the instructor to have cheated the student may be given a grade of an F on that assignment by the instructor and if the work in question is the final examination or some large proportion of the work for the course, the F may be given for the whole course.
  4. If the student disputes the instructor’s finding of academic dishonesty, the matter shall be referred to the UNL Judicial Officer as required by the UNL policy on Academic Dishonesty.
  5. Appeals rights of the student
    • The instructor must inform a student of the right of appeal at the time the student is accused of cheating.
    • If a student feels he or she is treated unjustly, the student may take the case to his or her department or school’s Grading Appeals Committee.
    • The student may appeal the departmental committee’s decision to the College Grading Appeals Committee if he or she is not satisfied.
STUDENT EVALUATION OF COURSES AND FACULTY
Student evaluations are part of the materials submitted for annual review, promotion, and tenure of the faculty. In addition, evaluations are used by the faculty members for possible course modification, syllabus revision, and/or reinforcement of course content, materials, and teaching method effectiveness. It is important to complete carefully and thoroughly the evaluations.

Faculty members cannot access the evaluations until after final grade rosters have been submitted.

Performance Juries & Final Exams

PERFORMANCE JURIES
The performance jury is the equivalent of a final exam for the applied area(s) of semester study. Juries in the major applied areas, required of music majors and minors, are held during the week of final exams. Scheduling is done by individual sign-up.

All applied music students must take a jury examination at the end of each semester. Students may be exempted from jury examinations only if they have performed a recital in fulfillment of degree requirements.

Approximately 10 days prior to exams, sign-up sheets are posted on the appropriate applied faculty doors (usually the head of the area, such as brass, woodwinds, voice, etc.). Specific content and length of each student’s jury is determined by the applied area. A panel of area faculty members serves as the evaluating group; each member registers a grade for the performance and the results are averaged together. The final jury grade is weighed as one third of the current semester’s final applied studio grade.

Failure to meet expected standards in a jury can result in probationary status for one semester at the end of which significant improvement must be demonstrated. If standards are not sufficiently met, dismissal from the applied area and reduction or elimination of scholarship support are considered by the appropriate area faculty member.

(Also see UPPER DIVISION ADMISSION REQUIREMENT)

FINAL EXAMINATIONS

Final examinations for all courses in the Glenn Korff School of Music follow the scheduling of exams listed in the current semester’s University of Nebraska-Lincoln Schedule of Classes. By action of the UNL Faculty Senate, “ Final Examinations for full semester classes are to be given only at the regularly scheduled time as published in the official Schedule of Classes or at another time during finals week, mutually agreeable to all concerned.” Students should be wary of capriciously succumbing to peer pressure if asked to vote for a change. Altering an exam time can result in the student being deprived of adequate study and preparation time. Take care to avoid inadvertently voting yourself into a scheduling predicament. This is particularly the case if the exam is moved into Dead Week (the last week of classes). The only examinations that may be given during Dead Week are laboratory practical exams, make-up or repeat exams, and self-paced exams.

Check the final exam schedule early in the semester (before the eighth week of classes). In the event a student is scheduled (as published in the official Schedule of Classes) to take three or more final examinations in a single day, the student should refer to: FINAL EXAMINATIONS POLICY in the current Schedule of Classes.

UPPER DIVISION ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Requirements for Continuing Study Toward a Music Degree

Music majors are required to demonstrate adequate skills in applied music, before continuing toward completion of a BM, BME or BA degree in music. The following prerequisites are in place to secure this requirement.

Applied Music - UPPER DIVISIONAL QUALIFYING JURY

Music majors must pass the Upper Divisional Qualifying Jury to be admitted into 300-level applied music. The UDQJ is usually taken in the fourth semester of applied study.

Part I - Basic Skills
Faculty evaluate the student’s minimal capabilities, including the ability to sight read and perform scales and arpeggios, to determine if the student may continue as a music major.

Part II - Musicianship
Faculty evaluate the student’s performance to determine if the student may continue as a music major.

Evaluation

The UDQJ is judged PASS/NO PASS, with Pass meaning that the student’s basic musical skills and musicianship are judged to be at least minimal for his/her instrument. The jury members in each area use a “general consensus” approach in determining the Pass/No Pass. A no-pass on the UDQJ indicates an interpretation by the faculty that the student has not completed the minimum requirements for the UDQJ resulting in a formal grade of INCOMPLETE. The student has two additional juries to remove the incomplete by passing the UDQJ. Following a pass, the student is permitted to register for 300-level applied music. If the student does not pass, the one-year time limit on the incomplete will expire, and the grade to reverts to a D or an F. The student may continue to register for applied study at the 200-level (maximum of two semesters) until the incomplete is removed. If the student passes the re-take before the beginning of the 2nd week of classes, he/she is permitted to register for 300-level applied music for that semester. (Note: A re-examination is scheduled only during the first week of classes following a semester in which the UDQJ was failed or during regularly scheduled jury times at the end of a semester.)

The status of music major is provisional pending a satisfactory completion of the UDQJ. The result of the UDQJ is validated on the UDQJ form with faculty signatures and filed in the Music Office.

Additional BME Requirements: Admission to Music Teacher Education Program
Admission to the Music Teacher Education Program is a prerequisite for a music education major to enroll in any 300 or 400 level music education courses. Admission is competitive and enrollment is limited. Admission requires meeting all of the following criteria:

  1. Completion of at least 42 credit hours with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  2. Completion of MUED 201 and MUED 244 with a minimum grade of  C and MUED 297 with a Pass.
  3. Documentation of proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics through successful completion of a basic skills examination that meets the Nebraska Department of Education competency requirement.
  4. Passing the Applied Music Upper Divisional Qualifying Jury.
  5. Completion of MUSC 266, MUSC 266A, and MUAP 232 (or piano proficiency).
  6. Completion of a personal and professional fitness self-disclosure form and formal criminal history background check (fee required). (Undertaken during MUED 201 and MUED 297.)
  7. Successful completion of a screening interview and digital portfolio review with music education faculty. (Undertaken during MUED 244.)

Student Organizations

The following organizations participate in many activities to serve the Glenn Korff School of Music. They also sponsor concerts, recitals, and activities which support members of the organization, the music students in general, and the School.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
Each discipline within the music profession has at least one organization designed to foster and promote knowledge and facilitate communication among serious musicians. All of the organizations encourage student memberships.

In addition to those listed above, there are specific organizations for singers, specific instrumental areas, and persons interested in musicological research. Please consult with the appropriate faculty member for further information.

Undergraduate Solo Competition

Undergraduate Solo Competition

Rules and Guidelines

The Undergraduate Solo Competition is held during the fall semester. It is held in conjunction with a Graduate Solo Competition that is run at the same time of the fall semester. No more than two graduate students and two undergraduate students will be named winners each year. Assuming that all required rules and guidelines have been satisfied, the sole criteria for selection of the winner(s) is the quality of the performance. In the case of multiple movements, or arias for example, judges may specify those that qualify for the concert. In all, the judges may select four, three, two, one, or no winner depending on the quality of the performances heard during the Undergraduate and Graduate competitions. Winners are scheduled to perform with the University Symphony Orchestra or University Wind Ensemble, as the repertoire dictates, during the same academic year.

The first round of competition, held early in the fall semester before Fall Break, will be area-based (the six areas for this competition are brass/percussion; organ; piano; string; voice; and woodwinds), and the first round will be organized, coordinated and monitored by the faculty member who is head of the area. No more than three finalists from each area may be put through to the final round of competition. This final round of competition, open to observers, will be organized, coordinated and monitored by a designted School of Music faculty coordinator. It will take place each year after Fall Break on the last Monday of the month of October, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm in Westbrook Recital Hall (rm 119).

Students entering the competition must be currently registered in the applied performance area in which they are competing. In addition, winners must be registered in the same applied area during the semester of the concert performance. Students who win in their senior year are ineligible as candidates in future Undergraduate Solo Competitions while other undergraduate winners are ineligible in the year following the performance. Students winning two competitions are ineligible to enter future Undergraduate Solo Competitions.

The online application form for the competition can be found on the Glenn Korff School of Music website under Current Students under Forms at http://arts.unl.edu/music/solo-concerto-competition-application and this site will begin accepting submissions in August. Upon submission your application will automatically be sent to your applied teacher, ensemble director, andthe competition coordinator. The coordinator will provide all application information to the area heads, who will then coordinate the preliminary competition rounds.

In addition to standard information including student name, performance area, year in school, and current contact information, the application requires:

1. The title, movement(s), composer (and arranger if applicable) of the music, with biographical dates and any other appropriate information, printed exactly as it should appear in a concert program.

2. The length of the composition in minutes and seconds.

For undergraduate contestants, the length of the music - i.e., the actual concert performance time in minutes and seconds - cannot exceed fifteen (15) minutes. Memorization is required in performance areas for which it is traditional. Multiple movements are permitted in the case of shorter works, and more than one vocal work may be presented, such as shorter arias. All vocal works must be in the original key. Rehearsal time in the audition venue cannot be provided.

Music performed in the competition must be the same as that for the concert. At each round of the competition it is expected that candidates will supply one copy of the music for the judges. Photocopies are not permitted.

The composition chosen by the student must be performable by resources available at UNL. Further the complete score and parts for the accompanying ensemble must be available for purchase or rental. If in doubt, the student and the student's applied studio instructor should consult with the appropriate music director of the accompanying ensemble in advance of the first round of competition to ensure availability of music, accompaniment capability, and appropriate instrumentation/ensemble size requirements.

Three professional musicians from outside the Glenn Korff School of Music are brought in to adjudicate the final round of the competition. UNL Symphony Orchestra and University Wind Ensemble directors may serve in an ex-officio capacity. Applied faculty with students in the competition are ineligible to adjudicate. Also, teachers cannot serve as accompanists for their own students.

APPENDIX: Undergrad Checksheets & Semester-By-Semester Plans
