School of Art Awards Descriptions


General Arts Awards

Myers B. and Martha H. Cather Graduate Excellence Award

This award recognizes a dedicated graduate student’s excellence and accomplishments in the visual arts discipline. This award is for unique vision, high artistic quality, creativity and innovation.


Dan and Barbara Howard Creative Achievement Award

Two awards to total $4,500, to be divided between one undergraduate and one graduate student at the discretion of the selecting faculty. Undergraduate awards must be a minimum of $1,500 and graduate awards must be a minimum of $3,000 per awardee. These awards are determined by a vote of the faculty.


Dan and Barbara Howard Award for Best Art Historical Writing

This award is given to one Art History student and represents a prestigious honor and is a recognition of your outstanding work.

Elgas Promise Award

This annual award recognizes one or more outstanding studio art students. These are awarded to students who are in their first or second year and have earned fewer than 40 credit hours in studio art.


F. Pace Woods Award

Awarded to a student who has demonstrated academic/scholarly and creative excellence. He or she must be a returning, full-time student, with 60 hours at UNL toward an undergraduate degree. He or she must have a minimum GPA of 3.2.


Francis William Vreeland Scholarship Award

Awarded to the art student in advanced standing (senior, or graduate) in regular attendance for the most meritorious and original work, or collected works - demonstrating exceptional creative ability in graphic and plastic art in painting and sculpture or any other medium or mediums of like creative expression that may or shall have superseded painting and sculpture in the fine arts. Faculty nominate students, finalists display works and awards are determined by a vote of all of art faculty members.


Henry Grabowski Art Education Memorial Award

Awarded to one student based on “creativity” in any medium and selected by the juror during the school’s annual undergraduate student art competition exhibition. This cash award is provided from a trust held by the Nebraska Art Association/Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden.


Jean R. Faulkner Memorial Art Exhibition Awards

Four awards of $250 each. Awarded by the juror of the Annual Undergraduate Student Exhibition to students who are studio art majors.


Thomas P. Coleman Memorial Printmaking Award

Two annual awards for students who have demonstrated creative ability in the field of printmaking, with particular emphasis on intaglio and/or lithography. One award is to be made to an undergraduate student and one to a graduate student. These awards are recommended by the professors in printmaking.


Trickey Memorial Fellowship in the Studio Arts Award

Recipients must be regularly enrolled full–time graduate students. A minimum $500 annual award, Artistic creativity is the only criterion for this scholarship. It is selected by the faculty based on student portfolio submissions.


Undergraduate Capstone Awards

Myers B. and Martha H. Cather Excellence in Design Award

This award recognizes a dedicated undergraduate student’s excellence and accomplishments in the Graphic Design discipline. This award is for unique vision, high artistic quality, creativity and innovation.


Perry Family Award

This award is given to one or two graduates each semester in recognition of both your accomplishments and your potential.


Gomez Art Supply Award

This award is presented to one outstanding student in each Capstone exhibition.
