CMI - Eligibility and Requirements

Participants must be in college or recent college graduates (undergraduate or master’s level, or equivalent). International students are welcome. All fellows must be 19 years or older to participate. Individual performers and composers currently in a DMA program will not be considered.

Application period: November 1, 2017 through March 1, 2018

Pre-formed Groups

Application Requirements

  1. A separate online application form for each group member
  2. $5 submission fee for each group member, payable by credit card only
  3. Up to 5 audio recordings in .mp3 format (30 MB max in total size). Only one applicant for the group need submit the audio recording(s).
  4. The recording should be high-quality sound and should contain music that demonstrates the technical and interpretive qualities of the individuals auditioning.
  5. The membership of a pre-formed group must remain stable throughout the audition and participation process. A membership change in an accepted ensemble prior to the Istitute will affect the ensemble's participation.

Preference is given to the following pre-formed groups:

  • String quartet
  • Woodwind quintet
  • Brass quintet
  • Piano trio
  • Saxophone quartet
  • Mixed Ensembles

Pre-formed groups not listed above may also apply and may be accepted at the discretion of the program faculty.

Composers

Application Requirements

  1. Online application form
  2. $5 submission fee, payable by credit card only
  3. 2 representative chamber music scores in .pdf format
  4. Recordings of the 2 works represented by the scores (in step 3) in .mp3 format (30 MB maximum total size)
  5. A curriculum vitae (submitted via the Slide Room application form) that includes a list of works with instrumentation, timings and performances.
  6. A one-page letter of recommendation from your teacher that addresses how this experience would be beneficial at this point in your career in .pdf format. This may be sent directly by the recommender or by the candidate to Dr. Tyler White at tgw@unl.edu.

Composers accepted into the Institute will be matched with a participating chamber music group before arrival. Composers will bring a new work to be performed by that group at the Friday Composer’s Concert. They will work with their assigned ensemble throughout the week, and will receive feedback from the CMI faculty.

CMI participants will have access to the Glenn Korff School of Music computer lab which includes Yamaha XG-midi workstations, Finale and Sibelius 4.0 software. Printing is also available. Participants must bring their own laptops.  Wireless connections are available.

Individual Performers

  4. The recording should be high-quality sound and should contain music that demonstrates the technical and interpretive qualities of the individual auditioning.

If space allows, individual applicants will be accepted and placed into a group upon acceptance into the program.

Students must play one of the following instruments:

  • Bassoon
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Tuba

Individual students accepted will be placed into chamber music groups together and assigned repertoire by their assigned coaches to learn over the course of the week.
