We are thrilled to welcome two Nebraskans back to campus for a one-of-a-kind experience. “The Mentalists” David Fox and Clint! Runge are joining us for IGNITE! Our namesake, TV legend, Johnny Carson, put himself through college performing magic tricks. Whether it’s their great storytelling, the slight of hand or the misdirect of an eye, magicians are a part of what makes the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts spectacular!

Alexander Dupuis


Unknown

Alexander Dupuis is an animator, musician, and digital media artist. Through the creation of software, short films, and performances, he explores algorithmically generated audiovisual worlds informed by op art, computer vision, and Structural film. His work is screened and played in international festivals and concerts, and he also performs as a guitarist in the Happy Valley Band and the Verdant Vibes new music collective. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Music and Multimedia from Brown University in 2020, and currently lives and works in Rhode Island.

“Like Being There:” Understanding Mediated Presence

The “feeling that you’re really there” is the “defining quality” of the Metaverse for Mark Zuckerberg, whose Meta Reality Labs has spent more than $46B on it since 2019. “Mediated Presence” has a modern history from 19th Century cycloramas to last fall’s opening of MSG Sphere in Las Vegas; and VR, AR, and MR headsets strive to replicate this feeling in a more personal and practical way. Michael Naimark will present landmark examples, as well as several decades of his own explorations, at this artist talk.

The day will culminate with a dinner, guest speakers, and a film screening with awards.

IGNITE Colloquium featuring Signe Baumane


CEMA 101

Signe Baumane is a Latvian born, Brooklyn-based independent filmmaker, artist, writer, and animator. She has made 17 award-winning animated shorts. Her first animated feature Rocks In My Pockets (2014) premiered at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2014 where it received a FIPRESCI Prize. Rocks In My Pockets is based on true events involving five women of Signe’s family, including herself, and their battles with suicide and depression. It played internationally at 150 film festivals, was distributed in the U.S.

Join us for this IGNITE colloquium with Wesaam Al-Badry, an investigative journalist and interdisciplinary artist working in photography, video installation, sculpture, and painting through interconnected themes of identity, migration, stimulated wars, and the archives. His work focuses on the social and environmental issues in the U.S. Middle East and the North African diaspora. His current projects investigate how the image-based process, and text are complicit in using racialized ethnographic studies in Iraq.

IGNITE Colloquium featuring Katie Williams


CEMA 101

Katie Williams works in the visual effects industry as a digital paint supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic’s Vancouver studio. ILM has been a mainstay in VFX for the last 49 years, receiving numerous Academy Awards, Emmys, BAFTAs, VES Awards, and Academy Sci-Tech Awards. Since joining ILM in 2019, Williams has contributed to over 35 film and television productions including Star Wars: Episode IX, Black Widow, The Irishman, and The Mandalorian. Williams advanced to a lead artist role in 2021 and later became a department supervisor in 2022.
