2024 AI and Filmmaking Hackathon

Cinema 16, the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, and the UNL Grand Challenges Media and Information Literacy in the Age of Algorithms team are excited to co-host a one-day intensive AI filmmaking hackathon at the end of March. Creatives will offer up speculative visions of the future of truth, fiction, and generative media in the age of AI. The day will culminate with a dinner, guest speakers, and a film screening with awards.

Join this session of IGNITE to hear from Dan Mirvish - director, screenwriter, producer and author. He's currently on the festival circuit with his new feature, 18½, a 70s Watergate thriller/dark comedy. Prior to that, he directed the award-winning feature Bernard and Huey, scripted by Oscar/Pulitzer-winner Jules Feiffer, and starring Oscar-winner Jim Rash and David Koechner which screened in over 30 film festivals on 5 continents, had a nationwide US theatrical release, and sold to over 51 countries.

Anna Marie Piersimoni is a digital media specialist who currently teaches entertainment media at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in the Cinema TV Arts Department and at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln (UNL) Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Art. Her courses range from lecture classes such as “New Directions in Digital Media” and “Media and “Society” (criticism and theory) to hands-on introductory production classes in digital filmmaking at CSUN.

Join us for IGNITE to hear from interdisciplinary artist Paul Vanouse, who will be discussing his most recent project, “Labor” (2019), a scent-based bio-media installation which produces the scent of human sweat – not with humans, but with three glass bioreactors. The project poetically reflects upon industrial society’s shift from human and machine labor to increasingly pervasive forms of microbial manufacturing, and positions viewers to contemplate the changing borders defining what is human.

Hear from Peter Flaherty, a director and interactive artist whose work has shown in over a hundred international venues, including theaters, galleries, and museums. He conceived and directed The Dial, an interactive narrative combining augmented reality and projection mapping, which premiered at Sundance 2019. The Dial will be on display in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts from October 27th, 2023 - December 1st, 2023.
