Internships

The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts believes professional experience is critical for student success. Our strong connections to a variety of industries help EMA majors land prestigious internships—from working on VFX for Marvel films and Barbie to video game design for EA—that get them invaluable professional and networking experience.

EMA majors have held internships with the following organizations and more:

Brand Video Content Intern, Hudl

Michael Pritza

"For my internship, I work within the Brand and Communications team to create advertisements, hype reels for social media, product testimonials, content for workplace operations and anything else around the company that requires a video

The best part of this internship is bringing my creative skills into a professional work environment and learning new ways of creating. This has been immensely helpful while continuing to work on my EMA degree.

Having two years of work experience under my belt upon graduation looks wonderful on a resume in the eyes of employers, especially if it’s in a similar career field.

The skills I’ve gained and the projects I’ve worked on in the EMA program have not only enhanced my work ethic but also set me up to enter the professional world in a successful manner. College is essentially a test run for your career and the EMA program does a wonderful job of preparing creative thinking and time management skills.

Having a professional experience as a college student places you leagues above the competition when applying for jobs post-graduation. It’s more than just a part-time job, it’s preparing you for a more prosperous future in the long run.

I would highly recommend an internship like the one I’ve had with Hudl. Not only does the work apply directly to the skills I’ve learned in the EMA program, but the experience of working in a creative office space surrounded by like-minded people with a common goal of creating cool stuff is an opportunity no one should pass up. Hudl has been wonderful to me, and I hope other EMA majors get this experience."

Summer Intern, Calibraska Arts Initiative

Abby Wignall

"During my summer internship with the Calibraska Arts Initiative, I assisted participants with a variety of animation activities including making flipbooks with a zoetrope, stop motion animation with clay, and digital animation.

What I enjoyed most about this internship experience is seeing the passion the participants have for animation and their genuine interest in learning. Many of the kids I worked with want to become animators, especially the high school students, and talking to them about the characters they invented and the stories behind them was exciting.

I've wanted to work in animation since I was a kid and drawing, animating, and making stories has always been my passion. I especially love working on cartoons for children ages 7-12. Working with kids around that age and seeing the cartoons they like is inspiring to me. During this internship I got to work with creatives and industry professionals who’ve worked on projects with Disney, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Laika Studios and more. It was great to learn more about how they got into the animation industry and what steps I can take to advance my career upon graduation.

I am only going into my third year of the EMA program, and I have gained so much experience from my classes, clubs, workshops, and trips offered to majors. I have also received valuable advice from instructors and program administration on how to enhance my skills and succeed in the industry.

Internships are a great opportunity to test out a career path you want to pursue and see what it is like from the inside. My internship with Calibraska was an incredible opportunity and learning experience and I would definitely recommend to any student who is thinking about pursuing animation as a career."
