Ross Fright Fest begins Oct. 4

Lincoln, Neb.--The Ross Fright Fest at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center returns with a month of classic, campy, thrilling, surreal, and unsettling horror films. New this year are family-friendly options, a 3D double-feature on Halloween and two live performances by the Anvil Orchestra.

Fright Fest films will show on Fridays and Sundays in October. For tickets and more information on each film, visit https://theross.org/events/fright-fest-24/.

Rep's ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ opens Oct. 3

Lincoln, Neb.--“Welcome to a world of bustles and corsets and smoking jackets, of people marrying for name and station, and making sure you live on the fashionable side of the street,” said Associate Professor of Theatre Ian Borden, who is directing the Nebraska Repertory Theatre’s production of “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Alumna Hilt in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ musical heading to New Zealand

Lincoln, Neb.--Mia Hilt (B.A. 2022 Theatre Performance and Dance), was in the new “The Lord of the Rings—A Musical Tale” at Chicago Shakespeare Theater this summer. The show recently closed its run and is heading to New Zealand in November.

“This project was an absolute dream,” Hilt said. “I got to spend three months telling one of the most beloved stories of all time, working at one of the most iconic theaters in Chicago, while collaborating with a group of unbelievably talented artists. It was a beautiful experience that I am very grateful for.”

7 EMA students intern at Infosys in India

Lincoln, Neb.--Seven emerging media arts students had fully paid internships at Infosys in Bangalore, India, this summer.

Johnny Carson Endowed Director in Emerging Media Arts Megan Elliott secured the internships last year during a recruiting and networking trip to India by college administrators for the college’s new Global Arts Academy.

Infosys is the only Indian company in the top 100 companies globally and has an internationally awarded global entrepreneurship program.

Public reading for Kirk’s ‘Dante Under the Desk’ is Sept. 29

Lincoln, Neb.--“Dante Under the Desk,” a new play by Professor of Theatre Christina Kirk, will have a public reading on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Lab Theatre, located on the third floor of the Temple Building.

The reading is free and open to the public. The reading is made possible with support from the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film and will feature students from the Carson School.

It is the newest work from Kirk, whose recent play, “A House Divided,” premiered at the Lied Center for Performing Arts in September.

Emerging Media Arts students study in London

Lincoln, Neb.--Thirteen students in the emerging media arts program traveled to London from May 18 to June 8 for the study abroad course, “Story Abroad in London,” led by Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Arts Ash Eliza Smith.

It was the third year for the course.

Carson School students study at Shakespeare's Globe in London

Lincoln, Neb.--Sixteen students from the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film studied this summer at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, England, from May 25-June 15. The course was led by Assistant Professor of Practice Ann Marie Pollard.

Shakespeare’s Globe is a world-renowned theatre, education center and cultural landmark located on the south bank of the River Thames in London. It is a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, an Elizabethan-era playhouse.

40 students selected for new Carson Center cohort

Lincoln, Neb.--Forty Huskers—20 first-year students and 20 transfer students—have been selected to join the latest cohort of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts.

This is the sixth cohort for the center, which opened in the fall of 2019. There will be 146 emerging media arts majors this fall.

While 31 of the 40 students hail from Nebraska, this year’s cohort also includes students from Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota and India.

Grow a Show musical theatre workshop returns to the Lied on Sept. 9-10

Lincoln, Neb.--Following the success of Grow a Show Musical Theatre Workshops in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, the Lied Center for Performing Arts has again been selected to host performances of two original musicals with potential Broadway trajectory, being presented in a staged reading format for a panel of industry experts.
