Symphony Orchestra performs Oct. 7

Lincoln, Neb.--The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Professor of Music and Director of Orchestras Tyler White, presents “Danny Elfman and the Classical Tradition” on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall.

The performance includes the Nebraska premiere of Danny Elfman’s concerto for amplified violin and large orchestra titled “Eleven Eleven,” guest conducted by John Mauceri and featuring guest artist Sandy Cameron, violin.

“This concerto was my first time focusing on music specifically for symphony orchestras as they exist without external additions such as electronics and custom or rare ethnic instruments. I wanted to start creating pieces that were not for a specific performance in one place and one time, but that could be performed by any orchestra who wished to,” wrote Danny Elfman in the program notes. 

He set out to write a piece that would be challenging to a film music fan’s ear, but also varied enough for a classical listener’s ear.

“It’s not that I was trying to write something to please everyone, that’s impossible; but rather to combine these two worlds, the coalescence of which is essentially who I am,” Elfman wrote in the program notes.

The performance is part of the Lied Center for Performing Arts’ “Danny Elfman Week” Oct. 5-8, which celebrates the iconic composer and performer whose film scores include “Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Batman,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,” and more.  “Danny Elman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton” will be Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Lied Center. Also included on the program is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Overture to “Le nozze di Figaro” (The Marriage of Figaro) and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, both of which will be conducted by White.
