Wind Ensemble performs ‘Sharks & Jets’ May 4

Lincoln, Neb.—The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Wind Ensemble will perform a program titled “Sharks & Jets” on Saturday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m. in Westbrook Music Building Rm. 130.

Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Overflow will be in Rm. 119 with a simulcast on the big screen. 

Sharks versus Jets has been part of the American lexicon since “West Side Story” hit the stage in 1957. Join the UNL Wind Ensemble as they use this classic pairing to build a new musical structure full of inspiring juxtapositions and surprising similarities. 

The program will feature Roger Cichy’s “Divertimento for Winds and Percussion,” Oscar Navarro’s “Downey Overture,” James David’s “March Tumbao,” Johann de Meij’s suite from Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo and Juliet,” and Ian Polster’s selection of symphonic dances from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story.” 

“Even if you know these pieces well, you will hear them as you never have before as we mix and mingle the characters to play with the concept of dichotomy,” said Carolyn Barber, the Ron and Carol Cope Professor of Music and Director of Bands. “In lieu of the Upper West Side of Manhattan, we will be in Westbrook Music Building Room 130. Arrive early as seats are limited, and rumbling is not allowed.”

Barber said this concert is not to be missed.

“Although the Bernstein is an obvious draw (who doesn’t love some menacing snapping and jazz hands?), there are many musical characters who will wander through the scene, including Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. The percussion will be literally center stage, and they are a party unto themselves,” she said.
