Applied Music
MUAP 9xx (18-24 crs) in the major area
- Students typically register for 4 crs per semester for up to six semesters.
- Students must be enrolled in applied music with their primary teacher in every semester in which a degree recital is given.
Ensembles
Ensemble Registration and Participation-all students
- DMA students who participate in ensembles must formally enroll for each ensemble in which they participate.
- Students participating in ensembles in any given semester must register for the first ensemble for 1 credit.
- Subsequent ensembles may be taken for “0” credit. Registration for “0” credit requires a permission code which may be obtained from the Instructor of Record for the ensemble.
- Students must participate as a full member of the ensemble for the entire semester.
- Students who are conducting/coaching an ensemble, or who are accompanying an ensemble, may not use this experience to fulfill degree requirements.
Large Ensemble Degree Requirements
Students pursuing Performance–Winds, Strings, Percussion specializations are required to enroll in an assigned large ensemble (Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Orchestra, Repertory Jazz Ensemble) for a minimum of three semesters during their residency. Students may count up to 3 credit hours of large ensembles toward the minimum 90-hour requirement in their Program of Studies.
Large Ensemble GA Requirements
- DMA students with a GA/GTA who are pursuing the Performance–Winds, Strings, Percussion specializations are required to participate in an assigned large ensemble (Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Orchestra, Repertory Jazz Ensemble) each semester in which they hold an assistantship and are in residence (typically six semesters).
- Students may petition their Supervisory Committee for a waiver of large ensemble participation during the final (i.e., normally the sixth) semester.
Note: If, in a particular semester, registration for 1 credit of large ensemble results in a 13th credit (and hence the student would need to pay for this credit), students may petition the Chair of the Graduate Committee to take the large ensemble for “0” credit.
Chamber Music Degree Requirements
Students pursuing Performance–Winds, Strings, Percussion specializations must enroll in Graduate Chamber Music (MUEN 52 or MUEN 852), Winds and Strings, or Percussion Ensemble (MUEN 44P or MUEN 844P), Percussion, for two semesters. Students may count up to 2 credit hours of chamber music toward the minimum 90-hour requirement in their Program of Studies.
Literature, Pedagogy, & Other Specialization-Related Courses
MUSC 862 - Instrumental Literature and Pedagogy (2-3 crs)
Minor/Related Area (optional)
Instrumental Performance students have the option of electing a related area of studies. A Related Area consists of fifteen (15) credits, which may all count toward the 90-cr minimum for the degree. This requirement may be fulfilled by one of the following two options:
OPTION 1. Fifteen (15) credits of related graduate courses in one or two of the following areas of music: history, theory, music education, chamber music, or conducting. Other related areas in music must be specifically approved by the Graduate Committee at the time of approval of the Program of Studies.
OPTION 2. Fifteen (15) credits of related graduate courses in a department outside of the School of Music. The respective departments must approve all prerequisites for these courses.
At least 6 hours in the related area must be courses for graduate students only if they are part of the student's Program of Studies.
A minor for the doctoral degree must include at least 15 credit hours with 6 hours in courses open exclusively to graduate students (900 level or 800 level without an undergraduate level counterpart). It may be taken in any department that has been approved to offer a major leading to a master’s degree.
Jazz Studies Performance
