Opera and Musical Theatre share a mission to educate graduate and undergraduate students in the art of music theatre by providing high-quality training and meaningful performance experience in operas and musicals. Season auditions are open to all voice students at all levels of interest. Performers range from freshman music education majors working toward jobs in the public schools to graduate vocal majors committed to performance careers. The program's aim is to give every qualified individual as much on-stage experience as their time and energy will allow. In this way, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln can serve as both a training ground for students pursuing careers in performance and as an avocational cultural experience for those learners with other life goals. Performance opportunities are available in mainstage productions, workshop showcases, and outreach events.
UNL Opera serves not only the university community, but the greater state of Nebraska as well thanks to the generosity of the James C. and Rhonda Seacrest Tour Nebraska Opera Fund, which is dedicated to supporting the production, promotion, travel and other expenses incurred for outreach opera events, both artistic and educational, across Nebraska, especially in rural venues. Over the last four years, UNL Opera has brought productions to Friend, Ord, Norfolk, Red Cloud, North Platte, and Wayne, Nebraska. In October of 2019, UNL Opera presented the world premiere of Tyler White's The Gambler's Son to a full house in Cozad, Nebraska--the locale of that opera's setting, based on a novel by Nebraskan author Mari Sandoz and the life of Nebraskan painter Robert Henri (view YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFTBr4BZBxk&t=1572s).
UNL Opera was one of the nation's few performing organizations to produce live theatre during the 2020 pandemic, with an outdoor production Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen. The show was produced safely and successfully.
