2025 Horn Boot Camp (NewsItem)

TUESDAY APRIL 1, 2025 - WESTBROOK MUSIC BUILDING

The Husker Horn Studio will once again host HORN BOOT CAMP at UNL on Tuesday 1 April 2025! The camp will run from 2:00pm-6:00pm in the Westbrook Music Building. Horn Boot Camp is designed primarily for French Horn students from 6th-12th grade, but there will be enough information presented to benefit teachers, band directors, and community members of all abilities alike.

Check in begins at 1:30pm in room 132 of Westbrook.

Among the topics that may be covered:

  • Masterclass - if you are working on a solo for a recital or competition, this is a great opportunity to perform in front of an audience and get feedback. The registration page will ask if you’d like to perform a solo. The number of performers chosen for the masterclass will be limited.
  • Resources and websites every horn player should know.
  • Basic theory crash course - tips on learning scales, arpeggios, key signatures, and transposition.
  • IVASI Session - this has been a big hit, and a lot of fun! IVASI is a video conductor series where participants play along with a professional orchestra on some fantastic orchestral literature.
  • Playing in a horn section – featuring members of the Husker Horn Studio performing and talking about how to be a great section player.
  • Basic horn maintenance – this will focus on how to keep the horn clean, how to restring a valve, techniques for oiling the horn, and several other useful tidbits.
  • Husker Horn Choir - the final hour of Horn Boot Camp will be spent playing along with the Husker Horn Choir! In addition to just being a lot of fun, it will be a unique experience for many, resulting in more than 50 horn players making music at the same time.

Horn Boot Camp is completely free, and you can quickly REGISTER HERE until March 28th. This will be a fun afternoon, and everyone will have a chance to learn and grow. Any questions about Horn Boot Camp can be directed to alan.mattingly@unl.edu
