John Bailey, the Richard H. Larson Professor of Music (flute) in the Glenn Korff School of Music, will present his final UNL faculty recital on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Westbrook Music Building Performance Hall Rm. 130.

Bailey has announced his retirement, effective at the end of the academic year. The recital is free and open to the public.

Bailey will be assisted by Associate Vice Chancellor Christopher Marks on harpsichord and piano.

Bailey’s program will include Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata in C Major, BWV 1033; Robert Owens’ “Three Dialogues, op. 91;” Philippe Gaubert’s “Deux Esquisses” (1914); Adolphus Hailstork’s “Flute Set” (2003); and Fikret Amirov’s “Six Pieces” (1976).

“Except for the Bach, all of the pieces are works of the 20th century, but encompass a wide range of styles and influences, from classical and jazz to folk idioms,” Bailey said.

This past September, UNL hosted a centenary celebration of the birth of African-American composer Owens, who made his career in Germany starting in 1959 and moving to Munich in 1964.

“While he is primarily known as a vocal composer with numerous songs and cycles and a chamber opera to his credit, Owens composed several instrumental works, among them ‘Three Dialogues,’ dedicated to Munich flutist and teacher Edmund Wächter,” Bailey writes in the program notes.

Bailey has been a faculty member in the Glenn Korff School of Music since 1986. He is a member of the Moran Woodwind Quintet and principal flutist with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra. He is an active recitalist, lecturer and masterclass teacher. He was president of the National Flute Association in 2003-2004.

He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University, and he received his masters and doctorate degrees from Northwestern University.
