Dr. Brenna Sherman is a temporary lecturer in the Glenn Korff School of Music, where she serves as flute professor and teaches music theory, aural skills, performance practice and chamber music. 

Before joining the faculty at Nebraska, Sherman served as a graduate teaching assistant at both the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and The Pennsylvania State University, teaching undergraduate courses in music theory, aural skills and flute methods while coaching chamber ensembles and flute choirs. She has also held adjunct faculty appointments at Concordia University and Union Adventist University. At Penn State, she coordinated the university’s 2023 Flute Day featuring internationally acclaimed flutist Jasmine Choi. 

As a performer, Sherman appears regularly throughout the Midwest as an orchestral, chamber and freelance musician. She performs as a substitute flutist and piccolo player with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and has appeared as a concerto soloist with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Campus Orchestra, The Pennsylvania State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Medalist Band and the Rochester Symphony Orchestra. Her performance career also includes commercial recording projects, opera and musical theater pit orchestras, chamber music and vocal performance. 

Sherman’s artistic and academic work has been recognized through numerous honors, including the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Outstanding Graduate Recital of the Year Award, the Hixson-Lied, Korff, Emerson and Graduate Teaching Assistant Fellowships, and first prize in the International Charleston Competition’s 20th Century Music Division. 

Originally from Minnesota (“uffda”), Sherman earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, the Master of Music in flute performance from The Pennsylvania State University, and a bachelor’s degree in music and music education from Luther College. Her professional interests include collegiate music pedagogy, chamber music coaching, contemporary flute repertoire and preparing future music educators through comprehensive musicianship.
