Several from Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts win Mayor's Arts Awards

Several people from UNL were among the winners of the 2014 Mayor's Arts Awards announced March 12 by Mayor Chris Beutler and the Lincoln Arts Council. The awards formally recognize artistic contributions and achievements in the Lincoln area and will be presented the evening of May 28 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. 27th Annual Undergraduate Art Competition Opens March 17 at Eisentrager-Howard Gallery

The 27th Annual Undergraduate Art Competition opens March 17 and continues through March 28 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall.

The exhibition includes the artwork of 33 undergraduate students who have been enrolled in a studio art class in the Department of Art and Art History at UNL within the last 12 months.

"Phostimum" show opens First Friday

"Phostimum," a collection of photographs by UNL Department of Art and Art History student photographers will open at The Pilgrimer in Lincoln on First Friday, April 4, with an opening reception from 8-10 p.m.

UNL Fine Art Photo Club President Drew Davis, a junior in the Department of Art and Art History, came up with the name for the show, saying, "Phos is the Greek root of photo, meaning light. Plus 'timum' from optimum. Optimium light = Phostimum."

Visiting Artist Alexander Heilner to present a public lecture on Feb. 6

Alexander Heilner, a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography, video, digital imaging, installation, lighting design and sculpture, will present a free public lecture on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Richards Hall Rm. 15 on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln city campus.

His visit to the Department of Art and Art History is made possible with support from the Hixson-Lied Endowment.

Souto Featured in Drawing Magazine

Associate Professor of Art Francisco Souto is featured in the current Winter 2014 issue of Drawing Magazine in an article about his work titled “In Search of Lost Time, Pencil in Hand.”

Drawing Magazine is the premier, national, quarterly publication focused entirely on drawing. The magazine explores technique and materials, but also reviews contemporary artists such as Antony Gormley, Kiki Smith, Chuck Close, Amy Cutler and now Souto.

Medici Event Was a Great Success

MEDICI, a friends group that supports the Department of Art and Art History at University of Nebraska–Lincoln held its annual fund-raiser event on Thursday, Feb. 27 in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery.

Since its inception 21 years ago, MEDICI has raised more than $200,000 for the department. Donated funds have been used to bring visiting scholars to the campus and to purchase kilns, presses, papermaking equipment, catalogs and other amenities that contribute to the first-rate educational offerings for UNL students.

UNL Print Sale Feb. 7-8 at Constellation Studios

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Department of Art and Art History and Lincoln Print Group are holding a Print Sale on Feb. 7-8 at Constellation Studios, 2055 O St. in Lincoln.

Hours for the sale are Feb. 7 from 5-9 p.m. and Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Original etchings, woodcuts, lithographs and screen prints, as well as hand-printed t-shirts and Valentines, will be available for sale. There will also be a raffle of faculty and graduate work.

Dona Nelson's artist lecture has been rescheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 5th in Richards Hall 218.

Dona Nelson, a painter and professor of painting and drawing at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, will present a free public lecture on Tuesday, February 4, at 5:30 p.m. in Richards Hall Rm. 15 on the UNL city campus.
