This art song recital, though containing a wide range of musical styles from a number of composers, was programmed around Stephen Foster's Civil War-era parlor song, "Hard Times Come Again No More." The first four sets on the recital roughly correspond with the verses of Foster's song, and tell the story of one's will to survive through a struggle with chronic depression. The recital includes songs by Charles Ives, Carlos Gomes, Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert, and Aaron Copland (among others), as well as Foster's "Hard Times."
