Two GKSOM choirs to perform ‘Through Love to Light’ on the Lied Center’s main stage

The two auditioned traditional mixed choirs of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music, the University Singers and the Chamber Singers, will offer an eclectic mix of choral music spanning various time periods while honoring the contributions of composers from a variety of backgrounds and identities on a one-night only performance at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. The choirs will combine at the end to sing a celebratory song by Midwest composer, Elaine Hagenberg.
The event is free and open to the public. The Lied Center will be giving out socially distanced seat assignments for the concert the night of the event, but there are no advanced ticket reservations. The event will also be live webcast from this link: http://liedcenter.org/live
University Singers Director and Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Peter A. Eklund said, “Singers, instrumentalists, conductors, and audience members are excited to gather together for (perhaps) the first time since mid-March of 2020. We all know that we have been lucky to be able to keep some music-making alive here at UNL because of our facilities and Covid protocols. There will be a lot of variety on the Lied Stage that night.”
Chamber Singers Director and Assistant Professor of Music in Choral Activities Marques L. A. Garrett said, “We are excited that we can perform together in a safe way and that many people have made it possible for us to have an audience.”

University Singers
University Singers, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's premiere and historic flagship choral ensemble, presents the finest and most versatile choral singers in the entire University. While many of the choir's singers are music majors, students from throughout the University are encouraged to audition and participate. This ensemble performs music from the thirteenth century through the present, including works written especially for it. University Singers has performed repeatedly for state conventions of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association and the Nebraska Music Educators Association, and at regional and national venues including the North Central Division Conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, regional and national meetings of the Music Educators National Conference, and regional ACDA conventions. In 2001, 2008, and 2016, the choir was featured on a prestigious 8:00 pm solo performance at Carnegie Hall. The choir has a rich list of distinguished alumni that have gone on to lead choirs and music departments at major universities and Schools of Music across the country over the last 130+ years (and at least two alums have gone on to be ACDA National Presidents).
Chamber Singers
The Chamber Singers is the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s vocal chamber ensemble. A small choir of 16-24 voices, it is intended to provide the highest level of choral chamber-specific performance experience for graduate and undergraduate singers at the Glenn Korff School of Music and throughout the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The ensemble is open to all majors. The choir explores a broad range of repertoire specializing in literature for unaccompanied and contemporary small vocal chamber ensembles including works from early music eras as well as contemporary literature. The Chamber Singers have been privileged to perform for and work with many guest conductors and composers including Ola Gjeilo, André Thomas, Mack Wilberg, Doreen Rao, William Hatcher, and Eph Ehly, and in performance collaboration with The American Boychoir. They specialize in performing concerts in beautiful and unique spaces including the Sheldon Museum of Art's Great Hall, St. Mark's on the Campus, the International Quilt Museum, and the State Capitol Rotunda. The Singers have also enjoyed collaborations with the Philharmonia Chamber Orchestra and UNL chamber instrumental ensembles. Many of their members have served as the core vocal ensemble for UNL's 'Bach's Lunch' held in the nearby campus student chapel on select Fridays at noon. Membership in the Chamber Singers is determined by audition.
