University Singers present ‘Carmina Burana’

Lincoln, Neb.--University Singers, the historic, flagship choir of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, will perform Carl Orff’s masterpiece, “Carmina Burana” on Tuesday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. at First Plymouth Congregational Church.
The concert is free and open to the public. The total musical work runs about one hour.
“’Carmina Burana’ is one of the most famous pieces of music ever written, and its superb popularity has not waned a bit since its first performance in 1936,” said Peter Eklund, Hixson-Lied Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. “The text, taken from the Bavarian 11th and 12th centuries, was written by traveling students, monks, clergy, Golliards and young scholars and combined Latin and German languages that they were learning, studying and using. Most of the writings were philosophical, satirical, naughty, irreverent, and bawdy, and the music captures the intent and mood in a magnificent, boisterous and unforgettable manner.”
The performance will feature guest artist and alumnus Thomas Gunther with Andrew Daugherty and Rebekah Stiles on piano. The performance will also be assisted by percussionists Adam Blaker, Gabrielle Brady, Kevin Lloyd, Sydney Thomas and Joel Williams.
