Erica Larsen-Dockray
Erica Larsen-Dockray is an experimental artist who grew up near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. In her undergraduate studies, she majored in graphic design at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. After two years at Lincoln, she transferred to The Art Institute of Phoenix and graduated in 2003 with a B.A. in Media Arts and Animation. In 2010 she received a B.F.A. in Experimental Animation from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and in 2012 graduated with her M.F.A. in Experimental Animation and Integrated Media also from CalArts.
Larsen-Dockray received a research assistantship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as an Associate Interactive Media Developer (2006-2008) has assisted the independent filmmaker, Joanna Priestley (2009), was granted a teaching assistantship as a web developer for the School of Film and Video also at CalArts (2011), and taught animation and mixed media sculpture at various Los Angeles County schools as a student instructor for the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Community Arts Partnership. In 2009, Larsen-Dockray was a CalArts visiting artist at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ) in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she collaborated with IKJ students in producing a performance piece that combined animation, dance, jazz, and gamelan for the Art Festival Kesenian Indonesia in Isi Surakarta, Indonesia where it was performed.
Larsen-Dockray has worked as a motion graphics artist, a K-12 art instructor, and continues freelancing web development, video production, motion graphics, mural restoration and production, graphic design, interdisciplinary art and animation through her own business, eekart which she founded in 2005.
Larsen-Dockray’s art practice includes hybrid installations consisting of varying elements such as painting, moving image, dance, theater, interactivity, and experimental projection. Her thesis, which focused on the experience of pregnancy in a highly interactive combination of science museum and amusement park fun house, was awarded an Interdisciplinary Grant from Calarts (2011).
Her latest projects include launching her business SCV Adventure Play with her husband, Jeremiah, creating play spaces for children and adults which facilitate and support self-directed and unstructured play, with the artist Nancy Buchanan decorating cakes to raise mental health awareness, and working with Cybele Moon, an Assistant Professor/ Costume Design at East Carolina University creating performance pieces where costume and projected animation become one. Larsen-Dockray is currently an adjunct faculty at her alma mater, the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), in the Film/Video school’s experimental animation program. She is also a teaching artist at Inner City Arts in downtown Los Angeles teaching Media Arts to grade school students and Animation to 7-12th grades. Erica also co-founded Calibraska Arts Initiative which is a summer program bringing artists from California to small town Western Nebraska to teach multi-generational workshops in their métier while enveloped in the Nebraska landscape.
