The halls of the Westbrook Music Building are once again busy and our faculty, staff, students and alumni are all doing amazing things! Read about them here:
Jeni Houser
Nebraska Alumna soprano Jeni Houser (M.M. 2011) made her Metropolitan Opera debut on Jan. 2, performing as The Queen of the Night in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”
“It was kind of surreal,” Houser said of her experience performing on the famed Metropolitan Opera stage in New York City.
“It was interesting because the rehearsal process and going to work there every day really felt the same as it does everywhere else,” she said. “I knew a lot of the folks I was working with. Everyone was good at their jobs and very supportive and helpful. It really felt like a pretty good work environment every day. But when it came to the performance itself, it was unlike anything else I had done because I did not get to rehearse on the stage at all beforehand.”

Husker Horn Choir Performance
The Husker Horn Choir gave a 50-minute concert over the noon hour on Wednesday, December 18, consisting of traditional holiday favorites. Several of the selections were performed as a sing-a-long where the audience got to take part in the performance. This concert has become a tradition that has developed quite a following. This year more than 100 people attended the Christmas at the Capitol concert.
The Husker Horn Choir is an extension of the Husker Horn Studio at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and consists of UNL horn students, non-majors, and community hornists. This group performs approximately 5 concerts each year at UNL, at local venues, and also a seasonal favorite - the Christmas concert at the Capitol Building. The ensemble performs a wide range of works and transcriptions, from horn quartets to pieces written for 20 horns.
Xun Xu wins ASTA Solo Competition
Xun Xu, a master’s student of Professor of Violin David Neely at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music, won first place at the Nebraska State ASTA solo competition in October in Omaha. Anthony Nesland, a bachelor’s violin major of Neely, finished in second place at the competition. This is a statewide solo string competition held biannually.
“Thanks to the Nebraska ASTA (American String Teacher Association) for giving me the opportunity to show my talents in playing the first movement of the Saint-Saëns violin concerto,” said Xun Xu. “I never thought I could win this solo competition. However, whenever I play my violin, I will devote myself wholeheartedly, not thinking about the result. This mentality often brings me peace during the performance, and I obtain good results.
“The first movement of the Saint-Saëns violin concerto is a new piece for me. I started to practice this piece at the beginning of this semester. I am grateful to professor Neely for helping me choose this piece that is fit for my playing style. I feel so honored and excited to win this competition. This competition gives me more motivation to go further and further on the road of music. In addition, I would like to thank Professor David Neely and Professor Darlington. They helped me to improve my understanding of music and pushed my performance to a higher level. Also, I want to thank my accompanist Liping Xia, and her excellent playing makes the music sound more beautiful.”
Stanley Kleppinger's Advanced Tonal Theory class
Associate Professor Music Theory Dr. Stanley Kleppinger's Advanced Tonal Theory class “performed” an eighteenth-century music theory in student-teacher dialogue: Joseph Riepel’s Fundamentals of Musical Composition (1752). Kleppinger asked some of the class to participate in the “continuo” performance that accompanies the dramatic affair. Students took turns being the master and pupil as well.
Pam Starr Class Workout
Professor of Music History Dr. Pamela Starr's class: Music 365, History and Literature I, for BM, BMED, and BA students on Friday explored the elements of Baroque instrumental music and style, by looking at a concerto by Vivaldi. Because Starr has been developing an article on teaching Baroque Music through working out to it, she thought it would be interesting to do some workout to the Vivaldi concerto they are studying, followed by an explanation of WHY it is so useful as workout music: namely, the elements of its musical style, which lend themselves beautifully to keeping moving and keeping fit.
West Central NATS' Conference and Regional Student Auditions
Forty-eight Glenn Korff School of Music voice students traveled Thursday, October 31 to Manhattan, Kansas for West Central NATS' Conference and Regional Student Auditions, which serve as the qualifying auditions to advance to NATS National Student Auditions.
From the GKSOM voice faculty, Dr. William Shomos, Prof. Donna Harler-Smith, and Dr. Jamie Reimer also attended the conference and served as adjudicators during the two days of auditions. GKSOM GTAs: Kiya Fife, Elaina Matthews, Trey Meyer, and Hayley Shoemaker also served as adjudicators during portions of the auditions.
As West Central NATS' regional governor, Alisa Belflower planned the 2019 conference, presided over the region's board meeting, and hosted the varied events during the conference attended by NATS members, collaborative pianists, guest artists, and voice students—collectively 520 people participated in this year's conference at Kansas State University.
Glenn Korff School of Music students made an impressive showing in these regional auditions with a record-breaking 411 students entered from across the Midwest.
The GKSOM had 11 students qualify to move on to the national round of this competition in the spring. Our students earned a total of 43 recognitions for their vocal performances of classical and music theatre repertoire.
Three of the students performed in master classes with eminent guest artists during the 45th annual West Central NATS Conference, which was held simultaneously with the Student Auditions.
In addition, Hayley Shoemaker (student of Jamie Reimer) was chosen as one of only five finalists in the biennial NATS Artist Awards (NATSAA) for emerging young artists. The regional NATSAA auditions were judged by Rebecca Copley, Donna Harler-Smith, and Todd Staerkel on Thursday, October 31, 2019, in Manhattan KS.
