Four distinguished professors retire from Hixson-Lied College
Lincoln, Neb.--Four distinguished professors in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts retired this spring after a combined 145 years of service to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln: Donna Harler-Smith, Karen Kunc, Pamela Starr and Alison Stewart.
Donna Harler-Smith
Harler-Smith is professor of voice in the Glenn Korff School of Music. She has taught at Nebraska since 1976. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Denison University and a master's degree from the College-Conservatory of Music-University of Cincinnati.

White’s orchestral composition awarded The American Prize

Jazz in June to support Nebraska artists through streaming concerts, videos
Lincoln, Neb.--For its 29th season, the Jazz in June concert series will present five evenings of online jazz to be streamed from the comfort and safety of one’s home.
This year’s series, presented by the Cooper Foundation, will feature Nebraska artists who have fewer opportunities to perform during the coronavirus pandemic.
The lineup includes:
• June 2: Mesonjixx — a soul jazz artist from Omaha
• June 9: Andrew Wray — a University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music student drummer and composer who performs electronic jazz

Hixson-Lied Faculty, Staff awards announced
Lincoln, Neb.--The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts announced the 2020 recipients of the Hixson-Lied Faculty and Staff awards. These awards are made possible by the Hixson-Lied Endowment.
The following awards were presented:
• The College Distinguished Teaching Award was presented to Hye-Won Hwang, assistant professor of practice in dance from the Glenn Korff School of Music. This award recognizes a professor who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and a selfless dedication to students.

New Marks CD features two major organ symphonies
Lincoln, Neb.--Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Associate Dean and Professor of Organ Christopher Marks has released a new CD titled “Two American Organ Symphonies One American Classic Organ.”
The CD includes performances of two major organ symphonies, Leo Sowerby’s Symphony in G Major and Edward Shippen Barnes’ Second Symphony, Op. 37. Both were performed on the 1959 Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1308 organ at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Shreveport, Louisiana.
The recording on the CD represents more than 20 years of performance, study—and some unpredictable mishaps.

Cornhusker Marching Band provides virtual spirit for Husker fans
Lincoln, Neb.--The Cornhusker Marching Band provided some spirit for Husker fans watching the virtual Spring Game on April 18 with a video featuring members of the band playing “Dear Old Nebraska U” remotely.
Husker fans were encouraged to experience the annual Spring Game “in a new way,” thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nebraska Athletics streamed a video game simulation of a Red-White Nebraska Football game in Memorial Stadium featuring rosters comprised of Husker football legends.

Piano masterclass highlights creative recruiting during pandemic
Lincoln, Neb.--While COVID-19 may have cancelled the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts’ annual Nebraska Young Artist Awards day of activities on April 8, it didn’t stop the college from continuing to recruit these top artists in the state.
The College has hosted the Nebraska Young Artist Awards for the past 23 years, dating back to 1998. The awards annually recognize high school juniors across the state who are talented in visual art, music, dance, theatre, and film and emerging media arts.
