UNL Graduate Jazz Composer Wins Downbeat Magazine Award

Masayoshi Ishikawa, who is pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in jazz composition in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Glenn Korff School of Music, has won a 2014 Downbeat Student Music Award in Graduate Composition for Small Ensemble.

His composition, “Hotaru,” was selected as the award-winning work. He wrote the piece for the UNL Graduate Jazz Combo, and it was premiered at their concert in October 2013.

UNL Faculty to present a Holocaust Remembrance Recital

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music faculty members Karen Becker, cello, Kate Butler, mezzo-soprano and Susan Levine Ourada, dance; with Michael Cotton, piano and UNL and SLOdance dancers will present Seed of Dream and Other Visions, A Holocaust Remembrance Recital, on Sunday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall.

Nteractions concert features campus band, live tweeting

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Campus Bands will present an evening of wind music in a concert entitled Nteractions, Thursday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kimball Recital Hall, but in a switch from the norm, live tweeting will be allowed at the event.

Normally all cell phones are asked to be shut off during the performance but on this special night, tweets will be projected onto a big screen above the performers on the Kimball stage using the hashtag -- #unlbandsconcert

Evenings of Dance awaits beginning April 24

The ninth annual Evenings of Dance, a concert of work by dance faculty, guests and selected students, will take place April 24-27 Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Lied Center's Johnny Carson Studio Theater. Tickets are $7 general admission, $5 students and seniors, at the door.

More than 20 UNL Glenn Korff School of Music student ensembles to perform in April

As the Spring semester at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln draws to a close, there will be more than 20 student ensemble performances during the month of April as a part of the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Here is a look at each of the upcoming student ensembles:

Singing Small Festival Performance, April 1, 7 p.m., Kimball Recital Hall

Groups include: UNL Vocal Jazz, Pitch Please, Rocktavo, and Chamber Singers and more. Tickets: Free and open to the public.

UNL'S Tyler White wins Silver Medal for composition in Global Music Awards

Tyler White, professor of composition and conducting and Director of Orchestras in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Glenn Korff School of Music, has won a silver medal in composition in the Global Music Awards for his opera, "O Pioneers!"

Set against the panoramic sweep of the southern Nebraska prairie, "O Pioneers!" tells the story of Alexandra Bergson, a fiercely independent landowner whose devotion to her land and its promise may cost her the love of her life.

Several from Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts win Mayor's Arts Awards

Several people from UNL were among the winners of the 2014 Mayor's Arts Awards announced March 12 by Mayor Chris Beutler and the Lincoln Arts Council. The awards formally recognize artistic contributions and achievements in the Lincoln area and will be presented the evening of May 28 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
