Frequently Asked Questions
Which grant should I apply for?
- If you want to create new work or do research leading to a publication or presentation, use the Faculty Research/Creative Activity Grant.
- If you have already created work or completed research and want to perform, perform, or present your completed work, use the Faculty Presentation Grant.
- If you want to learn more or develop your skills as a faculty member, for example by attending conferences or workshops, use the Faculty Development Grant.
What if I have a project that seems to fit into more than one grant type?
Occasionally, a project might not fit easily into only one grant type. If you think this is the case for something you want to do, please contact the Associate Dean for guidance. Can I apply for more than one grant?
Yes. However, the Presentation grant has a limit of 2 funded activities per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). The Research/Creative Activity Grant is limited to 1 at any given time. There are no limits to the other grants or to having awards of different types. If I get a Presentation grant as part of a group, does it affect my ability to apply as an individual?
Yes. The Presentation grant has a limit of 2 funded activities per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). This limit does not impact other grants, and there are no limits to the other grants.Presentation Grant funding periods seem to overlap. Which one should I apply for?
Presentation Grant funding periods are designed to overlap. Each period is 8 months, overlapping by 4 months with each of two other periods (November–July; March–November; July–March). This means that any given date falls into two funding periods, giving you the flexibility to apply earlier or later for an activity on that date, depending on how far in advance you know about the activity. If the dates of your travel or activity straddle the boundary between funding periods, you may apply for either period.I just found out about a fabulous opportunity, but it is too late to apply for a Hixson-Lied grant to support it. What should I do?
Speak to your School Director to see if there are other possible funding sources. Can I use leftover funds for a different project?
No. Funding is granted for a specific activity, so leftover funding cannot be reassigned to a different activity.Should I drive or fly?
Current reimbursement rates for personal vehicle mileage may be found at https://nebraska.edu/travel/lodging-and-transportation. If mileage reimbursement for your trip would be more expensive than an economy airfare to the same location, you can only be reimbursed for the amount of the airfare. Occasional exceptions may be made – for instance, if you are traveling with a group, or need to transport large instruments or artwork that would otherwise be expensive or prohibitive to ship. Rental of a university vehicle is also possible and may be less expensive than reimbursement of mileage for a personal vehicle. How do I know when the application is complete?
You will not receive an email notifying you that your application is complete. If you have completed the application and entered your electronic signature by entering your UNL ID and password, the status of the grant should change to “Submitted for Review”. If you encounter problems with submission, please contact the Associate Dean. How much of my budget will get funded?
Funding from Hixson-Lied College grants varies widely, depending on the success of the application in the review process. Budgets are almost never funded 100%, but sometimes a School will add funds to the project. Hixson-Lied funding typically covers between 50% and 75% on average. When will I be notified?
You will receive notification within approximately 6 weeks of the application due date. What if I have other questions that aren’t answered here?
