Lincoln, Neb.--Associate Professor of Art Santiago Cal, Professor Emeritus of Theatre Arts Tice Miller, and the “Celebration of Philip Glass” event at the Lied Center for Performing Arts last April are among the winners of the 2019 Mayor’s Arts Awards.

Mayor Chris Beutler and the Lincoln Arts Council (LAC) announced the winners, which will be presented Thursday, May 9 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The 41st annual event, which is open to the public, begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and includes a dinner, awards presentation and winners' reception. This year’s Outstanding Event Award will be presented to “A Celebration of Philip Glass,” the April 2018 world premiere of a piano quintet by the renowned composer at the Lied Center. As part of the Arts Awards program, Glenn Korff School of Music Marguerite Scribante Professor of Piano Paul Barnes will perform the first movement of the piece with the Amore Quartet, a student ensemble.

Cal will receive the Artistic Achievement Award in Visual Arts. Originally from Belize, Cal has exhibited internationally, including Mexico, Belize, New Zealand and throughout the U.S. Earlier this year, he had a solo exhibition titled “Shaped by the Other” at the Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha.

Miller will receive the Legacy of the Arts Award. Miller had a 36-year career at Nebraska as a theatre professor, department chair and executive director of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre.
