Bushard named associate dean of Hixson-Lied College

Lincoln, Neb.--Tony Bushard, professor of music history and former associate director for faculty affairs in the Glenn Korff School of Music, has been named associate dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, effective July 1, 2024. Bushard previously served as the interim associate dean this past spring.
“I’m excited to have Tony remove the ‘interim’ from his title and become our associate dean,” said Andy Belser, dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. “As a faculty member and active researcher, Tony brings a wealth of experience to the position, and he has done a tremendous job this spring learning the role as the interim associate dean. I look forward to working with him as part of our administrative team.”
Bushard’s duties will focus on curriculum, promotion/tenure process facilitation, faculty research, Hixson-Lied faculty grant administration, college governance and administrative processes.
“I’m thankful to Dean Belser and the search committee for considering my candidacy and providing me the opportunity to continue serving the Hixson-Lied College as Associate Dean,” Bushard said. “I’m excited to give back to a College that has given me so much, and I look forward to continued work with faculty, staff, students, and our administrative team at such an exciting and pivotal time for the College.”
Bushard joined the faculty in the Glenn Korff School of Music in 2006 and became full professor in 2022.
He is a member of the American Musicological Society, College Music Society, Society for American Music, Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.
His research interests are in contemporary American music with a special focus on jazz, blues and film music, and he was recognized for his work with the Hixson-Lied College’s Junior Faculty Achievement Award in Research and Creative Activity in 2014.
His book, “Leonard Bernstein’s ‘On the Waterfront:’ A Film Score Guide” was published by Scarecrow Press in 2013. His newest book, “Listen to Grunge! Exploring a Musical Genre” in in progress. He is also the co-editor of “Anxiety Muted: American Film Music in a Suburban Age” and “Music as Art, Discipline and Profession.”
He received a B.A. in music (piano) from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, as well as an M.M. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Kansas.
