Lincoln, Neb.--Applications are now open for the new Bachelor of Fine Arts in Emerging Media Arts at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s new Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, which opens Fall 2019. New faculty positions are also open for applications.

“We are searching for future creative leaders,” said Megan Elliott, founding director of the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. “The new Bachelor of Fine Arts in Emerging Media Arts has been intentionally designed to robot-proof students for a future of life-long learning and relentless change.”

Within the BFA in Emerging Media Arts, students will select two of eight emphases from among experience design, immersive+interactive media, cinematic arts, story, virtual production, sensory media, data+art and sonic art.

“While we have emphases, the culture of the Carson Center will be one of convergence—a place to meet and inspire and dream ferociously big,” Elliott said. “And then prototype and iterate and finally execute. These emphases are not silos. They are the antithesis to that.”

Elliott has worked with faculty and her advisory council to develop both the curriculum and plans for the new facility.

“For all of us who have been involved in the process of developing the Carson Center, this is a busy, but exciting time,” said Associate Professor of Film Richard Endacott. “I have had the pleasure of helping to develop the new B.F.A. in emerging media arts over the past year, and I’m convinced it’s unique, innovative and will perfectly prepare our students to succeed in rapidly evolving media worlds.”

Construction of the new facility for the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts began in August at 1300 Q St. Approximately 35,600 gross square feet will be renovated in the building, which was the former home of the Nebraska Bookstore, to create a hub for learning and a springboard to new ideas, projects and businesses.

Construction is scheduled to be substantially completed July 31, 2019, and will cost $9 million. The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts was made possible by a $20 million gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation from the Johnny Carson Foundation in November 2015.
