Now enrolling adult students for piano class

To all the adults out there who have always wanted to play the piano, UNL professor Brenda Wristen has something to say: It’s never too late to learn.

With people living longer and having more leisure time, Wristen sees adults as good candidates to learn to play the piano. This class offers the opportunity to learn how to play the piano in a fun, low-key environment.

Consequently, Wristen, director of piano pedagogy and keyboard skills at UNL, is supervising “The Community Piano Experience.” The program offers 11 one-and-a half hour group piano classes that will center on basic music reading and keyboarding skills. She’s recruiting students from the community to take the classes.

Students who have never played the piano (or have forgotten their lessons from childhood!) will be enrolled in the beginning class on Tuesday nights. Students with a basic knowledge of keyboard skills and note reading will be enrolled in the intermediate class on Wednesday nights. Both classes will begin the week of February 5 through April 24, excluding classes on March 19 and 20. The lessons have a maximum of 16 students and will be held in room 23-2 in Westbrook Music Building on the UNL city-campus. Graduate students will teach the beginning class under the supervision of Dr. Brenda Wristen while the Assistant Coordinator will instruct the intermediate level students.

“This is a really wonderful opportunity,” says Dr. Wristen. “It will be fun, and the students will learn more about music while improving their piano skills.”

The class, designed specifically for adults, costs $175. That includes over 16 hours of group lessons, a textbook, and all additional materials.
