Lincoln, Neb. - Luke Thallas, a sophomore tenor trombonist from Council Bluffs, Iowa, majoring in music education, has won the 2013 Nebraska Jazz Orchestra Young Jazz Artist Competition. He will perform with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cornhusker Marriott, 333 S 13th St. in Lincoln.

“Luke is one of the most talented and versatile young trombonists I have met anywhere,” said Hixson-Lied Professor of Trombone Scott Anderson. “He has already drawn a great deal of attention from international teachers and performers in masterclasses as a performer to watch for in the future. He is truly dedicated to his art and craft.”

Thallas has performed as the principal trombonist in both the UNL Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, as well as the UNL Big Band and the Boneyard. He also played in the Maholla Trombone Quartet and the Capital Brass Quintet, among other ensembles.

Thallas won the 2012 John Shildneck Young Artist competition and was a finalist for the Arapahoe Symphony Concerto Competition in Denver, Colo., in 2012. Thallas is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Tickets for the concert are $25 for adults and $12.50 for students and can be purchased in advance at (402) 477-8446.
