Wind Ensemble concert is Dec. 1

Lincoln, Neb.—The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Wind Ensemble will perform Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall.

The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Carolyn Barber, the Ron and Carol Cope Professor of Music and Director of Bands, is the university’s premier concert band. Its select mission is to provide instrumentalists of advanced technical proficiency a pre-professional ensemble experience.

Their December performance is inspired by Sanford Meisner, who said, “Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances.”

“In keeping with the spirit of the Ensemble Performance Lab, our goal is to involve the listener in an immersive way,” Barber said. “Each composition presents a set of ‘imaginary circumstances’–Frank Ticheli’s ‘The Tyger,’ Aaron Perrine’s ‘In the Open Air, In the Silent Lines,’ Joel Puckett’s ‘It Perched for Vespers Nine,’ Julie Giroux’s ‘Bookmarks from Japan’ and Zhou Tian’s ‘Seeker’s Scherzo.’ The ensemble’s intention is to establish each set of circumstances as vividly as possible, not as a narrative to be followed but as an environment in which to ‘behave truthfully.’”

The musicians and audience alike occupy the same environment. 

“Our goal is not to show you a picture of a tiger, or tell you a tale involving a murdered albatross,” Barber said. “Our goal is to take us all out of Kimball Hall and put us in the forest with the cat, and on the ship with the mariner. A twig snaps…the mist closes in…how will it affect each of us? If you are looking for a poetically inspired collective experience, this is the event for you.”
