Two postdoctoral fellows in residence for national project on art, data science

Lincoln, Neb.--Dorota Biczel, recent part-time faculty in art history at the University of Houston, and Jessica Santone, associate professor of art history and visual studies at California State University in East Bay), will be in residence at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Art, Art History & Design for the 2022-2023 academic year as postdoctoral fellows.

Piano students study in Greece

Lincoln, Neb.--Seven students from the Glenn Korff School of Music, along with two students from the Lied Center Piano Academy, traveled this summer to participate in the Piano Plus Summer Institute in Xanthi, Greece, in July.

Marguerite Scribante Professor of Piano Paul Barnes also taught and performed at the institute, which is organized by Glenn Korff School of Music alumnus Andreas Xenopoulos (D.M.A. 2014).

Music education junior competes at Transplant Games of America

Lincoln, Neb.--Brendan Elam, a junior music education major from Kearney, Missouri, received six gold medals and two bronze medals at the Transplant Games of America from July 29-Aug. 3 in San Diego.

“Brendan is a gifted singer and Glenn Korff School of Music citizen who courageously uses his life experiences to make the world better,” said Associate Professor of Voice Jamie Reimer Seaman. “He is a wonderful ambassador for the music education and transplant communities.”

Carson Center, Black Public Media launch emerging media residency program

Lincoln, Neb.--The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts and Black Public Media (BPM) announced the first cohort of their new residency program, called the Black Public Media Residency at the Carson Center. The recipients, who are all developing creative technology projects, are artist Johannes Barfield, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; educator Rae Phillips, of Shreveport, Louisiana; and artist Andrea Walls, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Nebraska Repertory Theatre receives tourism support grant

Lincoln, Neb.--The Nebraska Repertory Theatre has received a $150,000 Tourism Support Grant from the City of Lincoln and Lancaster County. The awards, given to 15 organizations, were announced by Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird at a press conference on Aug. 11. 

The Lied Center for Performing Arts was also awarded a tourism support grant. The Rep and the Lied Center were the only University of Nebraska–Lincoln organizations to receive the grants.

Forty-five students have been selected to join the latest cohort of the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. Thirty-five of the 45 students hail from Nebraska. A key part of the emerging media arts curriculum is preparing students for hugely disruptive forces in artificial intelligence and virtual production that have changed the face of several industries.

45 students selected for new Carson Center cohort

Lincoln, Neb.--Forty-five students — 25 recent high school graduates and 20 transfer students — have been selected to join the latest cohort of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts.

This is the fourth and largest cohort for the center, which opened in fall 2019. There will be 125 students majoring in emerging media arts this fall.

While 35 of the 45 students hail from Nebraska, this year’s cohort also includes students from Colorado, Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma, as well as Thailand.

Cornhusker Marching Band exhibition is Aug. 19

Lincoln, Neb.--The Cornhusker Marching Band will hold its annual exhibition concert on Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Stadium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The annual concert will present highlights of what the Cornhusker Marching Band works on during their pre-season Band Camp, including the popular “drill down” and a preview of the first halftime show.

The Community Piano Experience offers group piano classes for beginning and intermediate piano students. Registration for fall classes ends Aug. 31.

Animation, production art exhibition continues at Eisentrager-Howard Gallery

Lincoln, Neb.--“Building a Narrative: Production Art and Pop Culture,” featuring original artwork from popular films, animated television series, comics and trading cards, is on display through Oct. 7 in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery.

As part of the Lincoln Collects series, the exhibition is comprised of more than 140 selected works from the private collection of alumnus Trent Claus (B.F.A. 2006), who is a visual effects supervisor for Lola VFX.

Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 12:30-4:30 p.m. with a brief closure from 2-2:30 p.m.
