Future Huskers learn about the arts

Lincoln, Neb.--The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts offered two classes for students participating in the Nebraska Alumni Association’s Future Husker University on July 15.

Assistant Professor of Theatre Michelle Harvey taught the course “See the Light: Stage Lighting & Color,” and Assistant Professor of Practice in Graphic Design Jen Landis taught “Art of the Poster.”

3 EMA students work on ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ series for visual effects internship

Lincoln, Neb.--Three Emerging Media Arts students in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts with three-month internships with Lola VFX had the opportunity to work on the new Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

Sophia Stueven, a senior; Ally Hall, a senior; and Megan Whisenhunt, who graduated in May, were credited in the series and have since subsequently transitioned into employees with the visual effects firm.

Carson School students return to study at Shakespeare’s Globe in London

Lincoln, Neb.--After a hiatus due to the pandemic, thirteen students from the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film returned to study this summer at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, England, thanks to support from the Hixson-Lied Endowment. The students were in London from May 16-June 4.

Shakespeare’s Globe is a world-renowned theatre, education center and cultural landmark located on the south bank of the River Thames. It is a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, an Elizabethan-era playhouse for which William Shakespeare wrote his plays.

Stark wins NATS national musical theatre competition

Lincoln, Neb.--Maddy Stark, a senior voice major and musical theatre minor in the Glenn Korff School of Music from Omaha, Nebraska, won the National Association of Teachers of Singing’s upper level (college junior and senior treble voices) musical theatre category in the National Student Auditions.

Beginning among a record-setting 854 entries in this year’s national competition, Stark represented the West Central region of NATS as she advanced through six levels of competition to be named the winner. She was awarded a cash prize of $1,600.

Lied Center Piano Academy begins July 11

Lincoln, Neb.--The Lied Center for Performing Arts, Lied Center Piano Circle and Glenn Korff School of Music will host the fourth annual Lied Center Piano Academy July 11-15.

The academy is designed for students entering grades 9 through their first year of college. The artistic director is Paul Barnes, the Marguerite Scribante Professor of Piano in the Glenn Korff School of Music.

May commencement included first EMA grads

Lincoln, Neb.--Among the nearly 120 Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts undergraduate students who graduated on May 14 were the first nine emerging media arts graduates from the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts.

The Carson Center opened in the fall of 2019. Preparations for the center were launched in 2015 with a $20 million gift from the foundation of iconic talk show host Johnny Carson.

The students graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in emerging media arts.

Alumni award winners return to campus

Lincoln, Neb.--Tim Andersen (B.M.E. 1982) and Abby Miller (B.A. 2002) returned to campus in April as part of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Honors Day celebration.

Andersen received the Alumni Achievement Award in Music. He has combined a successful teaching and performing career in the Dallas/Fort Worth area over the past 38 years.

UNL Choirs tour France

Lincoln, Neb.--The University Singers and Chamber Singers in the Glenn Korff School of Music are on a choral trip to France May 14-24. 

They are performing at extraordinary concert venues including the Gothic Beauvais Cathedral, Rouen Gothic Cathedral, the American Cemetery at Normandy, Eglise Notre Dame l’Assomption, St. Michel, St. Vincent Cathedral, Le Mans Cathedral, Chartres Cathedral, and more. Their trip also includes a visit to Monet’s Gardens at Giverny.
