Carson Center dedication events begin Nov. 15
Lincoln, Neb.--Experts say the U.S. economy is being rapidly reshaped by emerging media technologies, with entire industries being “vaporized” and turned into software. This new economy is fundamentally changing the way companies go to market, influence their customers and engage their audiences.

Nebraska Lectures to feature Simon’s ‘Nebraska Songbook’
Lincoln, Neb.--The Nebraska Lectures, the Chancellor’s Distinguished Speaker Series, presents “Nebraska Songbook” on Friday, Nov. 8 at 3:30 p.m. at Sheldon Museum of Art.
“Nebraska Songbook” is an original composition for soprano and piano by Glenn Korff School of Music Assistant Professor of Composition Greg Simon and will be performed by Jamie Reimer, Associate Professor of Voice, and Brenda Wristen, Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy. Simon will open the lecture with a discussion of the meaning and inspiration behind the piece.

Hoff receives grant for archaeological research in Turkey
Lincoln, Neb.--School of Art, Art History & Design Professor of Art History Michael Hoff has received a nearly $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Ankara for his archaeological research in Turkey.
“I was very pleased that we received this grant,” Hoff said. “It’s going to help us tremendously in our desire to preserve these mosaics.”

Nebraska Repertory Theatre presents 'The Glass Menagerie'
Lincoln, Neb.--The Nebraska Repertory Theatre presents Tennessee Williams’ timeless memory play, “The Glass Menagerie,” directed by the Rep’s Artistic Director Andy Park.
Performances are Nov. 6-17 in the Temple Building at 12th and R streets. For tickets and showtimes, visit http://www.nebraskarep.org.
The play follows the fragile Wingfield family: Tom, an aspiring poet; his painfully shy sister Laura; and their mother Amanda, a faded Southern belle.

Percussion Ensemble prepares for PASIC with Oct. 29 concert
Lincoln, Neb.--The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Percussion Ensemble has won the Percussive Arts Society’s International Percussion Ensemble Competition. They are one of three university percussion ensembles that will perform during the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) Nov. 13-16 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
It’s the second win for the Percussion Ensemble, which won for the first time in 2016 and now again in 2019, in its first year of eligibility after winning previously.

UNL Opera premieres opera based on Sandoz novel on founding of Cozad
Lincoln, Neb.--The Glenn Korff School of Music is premiering a new opera “The Gambler’s Son” by composer Tyler Goodrich White and librettist Laura White. The opera is adapted from Mari Sandoz’s 1960 novel, “Son of the Gamblin’ Man,” which tells the story of the gambler and townsite promoter who founded Cozad, Nebraska, and of his family, particularly his young son, who became the world-famous artist and teacher known as Robert Henri.

Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist series presents two ceramic artists Oct. 30
Lincoln, Neb.—Ceramic artists Lauren Gallaspy and Sunkoo Yuh will present the next Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist & Scholar lecture this fall in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Art, Art History & Design.
Their lectures are Oct. 30 starting at 5:30 p.m. in Richards Hall Rm. 15. The lectures are free and open to the public. Their visit is co-sponsored by the UNL Clay Club.

Carson Center’s Fleming has work selected for Cedars-Sinai permanent collection
Lincoln, Neb.—Jesse Fleming, assistant professor of emerging media arts in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts at Nebraska, had his video work, titled “Jane the Baptist,” acquired by the permanent collection of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Katz receives Reynolda Fellowship from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Theatrix opens season with 'Smokefall'
Lincoln, Neb.--Theatrix, the student-run theatre company within the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, begins its 2019-2020 season with Smokefall, written by Noah Haidle and directed by University of Nebraska student, Ethan Greenlee.
Performances are Oct. 17-19 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. All performances take place in the Lab Theatre in the Temple Building at 12th and R streets.
