Lincoln, Neb.--The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts has received $625,000 in funding from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Nebraska Research Initiative (NRI) to establish itself as a Core Research Facility at Nebraska.
NRI funding is designed to facilitate and grow faculty research programs that have an impact in Nebraska and worldwide. The Core Research Facility will be called the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts-Design and Innovation Core (DIC). The funding is over five years.
The grant was awarded to Carson Center Director Megan Elliott, Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Arts Jesse Fleming, Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Arts Ash Eliza Smith and Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Arts Robert Twomey.
The DIC will leverage emerging media arts and technologies to strengthen the quality of a Nebraska education, cultivate interdisciplinary research communities of practice, engage with Nebraska’s startup communities and enhance an international network of distributed innovation outside of traditional metro hubs. Through their design methodology and systems-thinking approach, the DIC will use its multi-process production capabilities across a range of output forms.
The DIC is the only Research Core Facility in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts and the only arts-based research core facility across Nebraska.
“The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts is thrilled to create this Design and Innovation Core,” said Megan Elliott, founding director of the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. “Our faculty are already engaged in national and international research, and this Core Research Facility will only strengthen our research and innovation.”
A research core facility offers members of the University of Nebraska system, as well as external customers, access to instrumentation and/or services that is best made available in a shared fashion, so many can access specialized instruments or research expertise in an organized, cost-effective manner.
