Bushard named interim associate dean

Lincoln, Neb.--Tony Bushard, professor of music history and associate director for faculty affairs in the Glenn Korff School of Music, has been named interim associate dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.

“I’m looking forward to having Tony Bushard join the college administrative team,” said Andy Belser, dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. “As a faculty member and active researcher, Tony brings a wealth of experience to the position.” 

Bushard’s duties will focus on curriculum, promotion/tenure process facilitation, faculty research, Hixson-Lied faculty grant administration, college governance and administrative processes. 

“I’m thankful to Dean Belser for providing me the opportunity to serve the Hixson-Lied College as Interim Associate Dean,” Bushard said. “Through its support of my teaching and research, the College has given me so much, and I’m excited to give back, especially at such an exciting and pivotal time for the College.”

Bushard joined the faculty in the Glenn Korff School of Music in 2006 and became full professor in 2022. 

He is a member of the American Musicological Society, College Music Society, Society for American Music, Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.

His research interests are in contemporary American music with a special focus on jazz, blues and film music, and he was recognized for his work with the Hixson-Lied College’s Junior Faculty Achievement Award in Research and Creative Activity in 2014. 

His book, “Leonard Bernstein’s ‘On the Waterfront:’ A Film Score Guide” was published by Scarecrow Press in 2013. His newest book, “Listen to Grunge! Exploring a Musical Genre” in in progress. He is also the co-editor of “Anxiety Muted: American Film Music in a Suburban Age” and “Music as Art, Discipline and Profession.”

He received a B.A. in music (piano) from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, as well as an M.M. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Kansas.

Bushard replaces Christopher Marks, who recently became associate vice chancellor for faculty affairs in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor. 

Information on a search for a permanent associate dean position will be announced later this spring.
