Lincoln, Neb.--The Glenn Korff School of Music’s Jazz Singers will perform on Wednesday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Westbrook Music Building Rm. 119. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will also be live webcast. Visit https://music.unl.edu/webcasts the day of the performance for the link.

The concert is titled “As Ready as Can Be” and features special guests, Lincoln Southeast High School’s Ars Nova vocal jazz ensemble, under the direction of Riley Herringer. The UNL Jazz Singers are under the direction of Glenn Korff School of Music Lecturer David von Kampen.

“These same groups shared a concert last year as well, and Riley and I were both excited to plan to have them join together again,” von Kampen said. “Jazz Singers and Ars Nova are two of the most active and enthusiastic ensembles in Nebraska’s burgeoning vocal jazz community, so it’s terrific to have these two groups together again on the same concert.”

Ars Nova will perform on the first half of the concert, and the UNL Jazz Singers will perform in the second half with a program that includes “Almighty God” by Duke Ellington, arranged by Phil Mattson; “I Can’t Believe that You’re in Love with Me” by Clarence Gaskill and Jimmy McHugh, arranged by Darmon Meader; “Rhiannon” by Stevie Nicks, arranged by von Kampen; “The End of the World” by Sylvia Dee and Arthur Kent, arranged by von Kampen; “A Quiet Place” by Ralph Carmichael, arranged by Mervyn Warren and adapted by von Kampen; and “Rye Whiskey,” arranged by von Kampen.

“Vocal jazz is just special,” von Kampen said. “There’s something magical about human voices coming together to produce the complex harmony of jazz. If you’ve heard it, you know. It’s a tremendous privilege for these groups to bring this incredible music to life.”
