Souto's 'A Memory in Peril' exhibition responds to his native Venezuela

Lincoln, Neb.—University of Nebraska–Lincoln Professor of Art Francisco Souto opens a solo exhibition titled “A Memory in Peril” at the Kiechel Fine Art Gallery in Lincoln on Sept. 16.

The exhibition runs Sept. 16-Nov. 1 at the gallery, located at 1208 O St. An opening reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 16 from 6-9 p.m.

“A Memory in Peril” is a compilation of works in response to the current reality that is affecting Souto’s native land of Venezuela.

Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Series begins Sept. 15

Lincoln, Neb.--Photographer Deborah Luster and Ceramist Shoko Teruyama will give consecutive public lectures as the first speakers in the Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist & Scholar Lecture Series on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m. in Westbrook Music Building Rm. 119 on the University of Nebraska city campus.
 
The Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist & Scholar Lecture Series of the School of Art, Art History & Design brings notable artists, scholars and designers to campus each semester to enhance the education of students.

UNL Graphic design exhibition "Impetus" to have closing reception Sept. 14

Lincoln, Neb.--A closing reception for the exhibition “Impetus” will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor link at Nebraska Innovation Campus. In addition, guided tours of Nebraska Innovation Studio (the Maker Space) will be available at 5 and 6 p.m.

“This is a terrific time to get out to Nebraska Innovation Campus and explore this fabulous new facility and discover tools to create with,” said Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Stacy Asher.

Nebraska National Exhibition runs Sept. 2-23 at Eisentrager-Howard Gallery

Lincoln, Neb.—The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Art, Art History & Design announces the fifth annual Nebraska National Undergraduate Juried Art Exhibition. The exhibition features the work of the best undergraduate student artists from across the country.

Nebraska National opens Sept. 2 and continues through Sept. 23 in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall. There will be a closing reception on Friday, Sept. 23 from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery with the awards announced at 6 p.m.

UNL MFA photography student wins Imagining America fellowship

Lincoln, Neb.--Zora Murff, a second-year Master of Fine Arts student in photography in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Art, Art History & Design, has been selected as a recipient of an Imagining America:  Artists and Scholars in Public Life/Joy of Giving Something, Inc. $2,000 fellowship award.

UNL Department of Art & Art History is renamed School of Art, Art History & Design

Lincoln, Neb.--The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Department of Art & Art History has been renamed the School of Art, Art History & Design.

The name change was approved by the Board of Regents at their July 22 meeting and is effective immediately.

The School resides in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, which also includes the Glenn Korff School of Music, the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film and the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

'UNL Alumni Artists 1974-1978' on display this summer at Eisentrager-Howard Gallery

Lincoln, Neb.—Forty-four alumni from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Department of Art and Art History will show their work this summer in the exhibition “UNL Alumni Artists 1974-1978” in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall.

The exhibition opens May 16 and continues through Aug. 5 in the gallery, which is located on the first floor of Richards Hall. Visitors can stop by Rm. 120 of Richards Hall Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for access to the gallery.

Art at Cedar Point receives Rural Futures Institute grant

Lincoln, Neb.--The Department of Art and Art History’s Art at Cedar Point program has received a $19,340 Teaching and Engagement competitive award from the University of Nebraska’s Rural Futures Institute.

“I’m very excited,” said Cather Professor of Art Karen Kunc, who coordinates the Art at Cedar Point program. “I’m really pleased and honored to be in the group that the Rural Futures Institute has supported. It does mean a belief in our seriousness of purpose and in our potential.”

Art history undergrad has internship in Germany this summer

Lincoln, Neb.--Anika Zempleni, a junior art history and advertising and public relations dual major from Lincoln, Nebraska, has an internship this summer at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, Germany.

She will be there June 27 until Aug. 5 and will be working with Dr. Jochen Sander, the vice director for scholarly affairs at the museum and an art history professor at Goethe University in Frankfurt. She will assist him with his research.

Graduate ceramics student is selected as Emerging Artist 2016

Lincoln, Neb.--Qwist Joseph, who graduates in May with his Master of Fine Arts in ceramics in the Department of Art and Art History, has been selected by Ceramics Monthly magazine as an Emerging Artist 2016.

He is just one of 14 artists nationally selected by the magazine for this honor, and his work is featured in their May 2016 issue. All ceramic artists, both U.S. and international, who have been actively pursuing a career in ceramics for less than 10 years were eligible to apply.
